The stock FX cooler has actually fairly solid even with the old Phenoms. It was good for a couple MHz overclock at least. When I first got my 8150 way back when I tried to overclock it on the stock cooler for the hell of it and got to 4.1 if I remember right. Slapped my Hyper 212+ on it and got it to 4.3 GHz.

Ya but this is far better and more quiet. So win win still:)

I'd not call it new. It looks afully similar to their old cooler. Still, the fan has always been the weak part on AMD's stock cpu coolers so it makes alot of sense.

It's the same block that shipped with the old Athlon X2 64 6000+, all they've done is add a modified shroud to the fan.

No it's a new OEM design, It's made by the same OEM, AVC, which is why it looks similar. It's bigger, heavier, and has more surface area. It can't have the same surface area if it is the same block with a different fan.

Old Vs New

It's really just a fan change, maybe some heatpipe layout.

Ok, both are very different, not just a matter of slapping a new fan on.

While there are a lot of similarities, there are a huge number of differences, not only to the height of the cooler and the fan used.

You will notice in the old design the at the center it gets thinner/ uses less fins, whereas the new cooler design gets thicker and has more fins at the top of the cooler. This combined with the increased height gives the new cooler a much larger surface area.

If you look at the copper plate at the base you can see that the heatpipes are simply bonded and pressed onto the copper base plate, whereas the new design has the heat pipes placed into new cutouts into a thicker copper base plate, giving the heatpipes more surface area to take heat from the main base plate, giving the new cooler more efficient heat transfer. One thing to note is that the heatpipes are also in a slightly different configuration.

There were 3 different types of cooler for the high end Athlon and Phenom cpus, one of those I'm 100% is identical with the block. I need to dig mine out it came with the 7750BE.
