AMD teases its Zen 4 Ryzen 7000 series CPUs at CES, and its "looks incredible"

Will be interesting to see if Zen 4 can work with DDR4 as well, Would make adoption a hell of a lot easier as I cannot see DDR5 kits with decent speeds and timings being any less expensive by the time it comes out.

I doubt it. AMD has never discussed DDR4 memory when talking about their next-generation CPUs previously. Using it with AM5 would force them to use it for ages, assuming that AM5 is intended as another long-term socket for AMD.

As for adoption, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is for those who do not want a full platform upgrade. It supports motherboards as far back as X470 and B450.

DDR5 availability should improve a lot as this year progresses. It won't be as cheap as DDR4, but there are workloads that benefit from the bandwidth boost.
 
Highly doubt it'll support Ddr4. It will require different motherboards and software just to cover the power.
Looking forward to these though, should give Intel a bit of a kick when they're performing hopefully on par but using less power and giving off less heat.
Let's wait and see though, nobody gives the full truth in these things and there is probably a reason amd didn't do any comparisons

Yeah. With AM5 AMD will have a clean slate. Would be a shame to them shackle themselves to supporting both DDR4 and DDR5 with AM5, especially if they plan to support it long term.

Right now, it doesn't make sense for AMD to show real performance data. It would only serve to make their current offerings look bad and make their upcoming Ryzen 7 5800X3D look bad. Saying that all of their Zen 4 cores are running at 5 GHz is enough to garner excitement. That's all they need.

Beyond that, adding both DDR4 and DDR5 support to their I/O dies would add to their transistor count. It would be a waste of silicon, add an extra thing for AMD to support. It would only serve to fragment the market and make things more expensive to manufacture/support.
 
I wonder will this have as many bugs and issues as Zen 1. I know it's new everything—RAM, chipset, CPU architecture, node, etc—just as Zen 1 was, but Zen 1 was new in very unique ways, and AMD CPU's were a bit of a joke back then. No one really considered them. Maybe this time it'll be a smoother transition because AIB partners manufacturers actually can trust AMD. AMD will also have more money to put into bug correction. It's looking like my next system upgrade won't happen until way later this year, maybe even 2023, so waiting for Zen 4 makes sense. But I really don't want to deal with all the issues that I dealt with in Zen 1 and X370. To this day I still have really irritating issues.

I sometimes get a crash on boot, otherwise i've had no issues with x370 1700@4ghz tbh apart from that annoyance it's been good, i just put mine into sleep mode then deal with the booting issue far far less often.

As for Zen4 as much as i'd like it, ddr5 is just too expensive atm it'll be a while till that changes.

It has been resolved on Zen 1. Totally. That is why I did not touch it for a long time. My first Zen 1 product was my Threadripper last January. I still had lots of issues with it, but thankfully not RAM or booting issues. Instead my Aquacomputer gear *hated* the USB on AMD. Having looked around this had not been resolved. It was mainly with the Hubby 7 USB splitters, which was a huge issue because that build had so many internal USB connectors. I had no issues on the X99 rig in there before it, so in the end I had to basically disconnect half of the USB stuff just to get it to behave.

Which meant if I wanted to change the colour of the 12v RGB system I had to pull something else out. Or if I wanted to access my fan hub and its 9 fan extension board I had to hot swap something else. Thankfully that is a "set it and forget it" item with onboard memory so it doesn't need continual fiddling with, but yes it was annoying.

On the 3000 series? I have had plenty of issues. Most of them right themselves after about a week of updates, but I still have one now on my small rig. Basically some apps (like Wordpad but not Notepad) take ages to launch. Oddly the hefty apps all load instantaneously. But like I say, the first week after a new install is a real pain.

This new Zen? will be a new Zen. With new boards and new sockets, new chipsets, new RAM, new PCIE. Expect big issues.

Again, this is why I totally avoided Alderlake for the first month. I only decided to get on it when the game issues had been resolved (mostly Battle Eye for PUBG) but there are still issues. However, I will be fair and say Intel are much more mature at handling new tech now and fix it way faster than AMD does. This is why I have not been in a huge hurry to get it running. I am still hoping a BIOS update will come out that will allow me to overclock my RAM to 4133, as right now 3800 odd is about the limit (been watching Buildzoid use his Aorus Pro).
