AMD Showcase their first Zen "Summit Ridge" CPU, which will be used on AMD's upcoming AM4 platform, have 40% higher IPC than AMD's last generation designs and will come with 8 cores and 16 threads.

I really hope these turn out well. It'd be great to see some varied builds for once instead of every gaming rig having an i5-6600k in it.

i imagine it is actually really 8 cores this time. so thats where the extra performance is coming from..
Atleast i HOPE its really 8 cores now.

While the release dates for Zen and the AM4 platform remains unknown, AMD's CEO Lisa Su has confirmed that Zen will be sampling to partners within the next few weeks and will be sampled widely in early Q3, which is a good sign that we will be seeing Zen hit store shelves by the end of the year.

I hadn't expected that part to actually happen. There were lots of things that pointed to a 2017 release for Zen.

Nonetheless that's certainly hopeful! That is assuming it's not a paper launch again.

It is really 8 cores. Just like the last one.. difference being each core isn't sharing half the resources constantly

the fx cpu's werent really 8 core even by AMD's definition of what a core was.. Well at least their original definition they used to proclaim the Pentium D chips weren't dual core. They just changed what they thought a core was for the fx series so they could claim 8 cores.. some one really needs to finally define what a core is. and i think i should be that person..

"if one core could not function as a fully functional cpu without at least a part of a second one being there then it is not a core"

there we go. Boom easy!

And by that definition the fx 8 cores were 4 cores with some extra bits. that was a lot like hyper threading as it could only function if key parts were not in use other wise it would be idle and act like a quad core.

Either way. It's a full 8 core CPU. SMT design. Just like Intel

I read a rumour somewhere that it could be competing with a 5960X.

Obviously take it with a maHOOsive grain of salt but imagine if it was true, Would be immense as we'd have actual competition again !

That's a fanboy dream. Against the 8 core sure. Not 10.. That would exceed 40% they keep talking about. Unless they are secretly revealing some 12 core behemoth later on...

Well yeah the 5960X is an 8 core 16 thread CPU hence it could be true :)

The new 10 core Intel CPU is just stupid expensive IMO.

You're right.. i was thinking of the new 6 series chips. Got confused since forgot the E series is a number generation behind the mainstream ones.

Imagine if they could come in at around $400 for their top top end CPU that could match Intels last gen extreme level $1000 CPU.

I'm literally salivating at the possibility ^_^

Last time I had an all AMD rig was a few years ago now, It was an 1100T X6 at 4.20GHz and 2 x 6970's slightly overclocked.

I don't really care about CPUs from anyone tbh. It's all bout dat GPU:p
my 3570k at 4.2ghz will last me couple more years before I have to upgrade, and then it'll be any X99 or whatever equal it is then(from either intel or amd).

woah woah hang on there. Youve had all those nice GPUs coupled with that 3570k?

Nice. Hasnt really been any good reason for gamers to upgrade since IB for the proper USB 3 support.

IF AMD were to come out with a 5960x competitor for $400, thrn slowly but surelu AMD will recover ground. There will always be those people that think brand is everything or are just less informed.

Yeah it's still going strong! Used to run at 3.6ghz 24/7 at 1v but it needed a small boost, it's been years and was showing its age in some games.

I don't expect it to compete with the 5960X in all honesty

Isn't that the same? ;)

They will do. Whether it ends up as a desktop CPU is another matter ;) . AMD needs to step up their server game massively.

That's where all the money is, so yeah they need to get back into that market for sure. Even if they gained 1% market share that's billions of dollars for them.
