AMD Ryzen 7 9700X beats prior X3D CPUs even without 3D V-Cache

Difficult to know what to trust as in another article posted yesterday from a different publication it says AMD's own Don Waligroski said -
"It wouldn't match the 7800X3D in gaming performance"
Yet in this article -
"AMD claims that their Ryzen 7 9700X is 2% faster than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D"
And from a performance standpoint it doesn't really make sense when the 9700X is 12% faster than the 5800X3D but the 7800X3D is around 20% faster than the 5800X3D.
I think on AMD's part there's been some crossed wires somewhere.
