Lovely review Tom. "On that bombshell..." Too bad you can't hear that phrase anymore. 
I really don't know what AMD was doing with that temperature offset. They didn't shoot themselves in the leg, they dug up their eye with a spoon. Imagine this headline:"Ryzen 7 on pair with 6900K for half the price and at 65 degrees overclocked!"
Definitely the R7 to go for.

Can't wait to watch this one tonight!! I will be buying this CPU, so it's relevant to my interests! I watched another video from a little known YouTuber who's name escapes me, and he did some benchmarking and somehow got his ram to 3600Mhz, and it made a serious improvement in game benchmarks. This CPU at 4Ghz + some higher clocked memory is a VERY impressive performer!
Which asus drivers did you use and which did you omit?
having the r7 1700 and the prime x370 pro, i haven't found the buggy driver(s) - yet.
system runs great at clean win install, and unstable with all drivers/util. from asus website.
running a lot of blender, i just love the system when bsods doesn't appear.

The 1700 does not have the offset.Only the 95watt chips, 1700x/1800 do. Tom needs to edit the article for that as AMD have confirmed the 1700 has no offset

Will do, I'll find it this evening and post it up. Grain of salt though, as he's not a well known guy with a ton of subs (less than 10K). But it was interesting.

I am sorry. I didn't formulate sentence well. I should have added "... offset on X processors". But they should have left all of them without offset.

So, this was an interesting review. I already have my 1700, but waiting on my AM4 bracket to get my AIO on there.
Currently I have a stable 3.75 MHz OC on there with the stock cooler and decent enough temps. But I'm looking forward to more overclocking testing once I have a decent cooler. The overclocking guide you promised (tinytomlogan) in the review video will be much appreciated.
I am looking forward to more motherboard reviews though. I went with a B350 Gigabyte Gaming 3. For several reasons, not least of which was it was available. But also because I fully intend to stick with AM4 for several iterations. Whilst the CH6 looks to be one of the best board on the market just now, if not the best, Ryzen is due an APU further in it's life-cycle. Which I intend to go for. But then I'll need onboard video outs on the motherboard, which are missing from the CH6. So fully intend to upgrade the motherboard later.
Anyway, the point is, an overclocking guide for the 1700 on B350 boards would be very welcome. Might help me try and maximise my current set-up.

I don't know can BIOS microcode help because CPU is lying to itself about the temperature. BIOS can report lower temps so the fans don't go berserk, but internal CPU management won't be affected until this feature is disabled in the core. Some more experienced and knowledgeable members can probably give us further information, because my knowledge doesn't go that deep.

A CPU microcode can fix it. It's like firmware for a CPU. Except much more complicated than that since it's a CPU.
It's up to them to decide if they want to or not

Great review and interesting to see that the 1700 and 1800x are pretty much tied together with the OC.
With the 1700 being lower TDP out of the box I'm curious if the power usage for the 1700 OC and the 1800X OC and the voltages for the OC's are similar as well. You'd start to think that the 1700 is just an 1800X with drivers telling BIOS to run it slower.

I am starting to think that AMD on purpose restrained 1800x because it is not finished, and platform for it is not nearly complete. Unleashing full power probably would do more harm than good, with all kinds of instability issues. But they desperately needed to release something.
The fact is that this is a totally new technology, and is in it's infancy. It is possible that we are seeing only the tip of the iceberg. Ryzen 2.0 would probably be the true step up.

Thanks! I watched it last night as AMD actually posted it on their FB feed just before I went to sleep. Some in the comments were shouting how the numbers don't match with other people, but that's to be expected. It's something I'm seeing more of. Whenever a benchmark doesn't match with their favourite review sites they immediately claim it is fake. That would be somewhat fair enough if it were just one review out of one hundred that saw different results—favourable for AMD results—but more and more reviewers are starting to show Ryzen closing the gap.
