AMD RX 480 GPUs have been successfully flashed with RX 580 BIOS files

So the new process is really not that unique? Well, that's a bummer. I really think these new cards should have been the same price.

Not necessarily, it is hard to know if most cards would be stable or how much more power these "boosted" RX 480 GPUs will draw when compared to normal RX 580s.

This is effectively a BIOS overclock, and with most of these new RX 580 GPUs coming with enhanced coolers it is likely that these "boosted" cards will run ver hot.
 
I was referring more to the stability. Flashing a GPU using the old process to a newer process could cause bricking, but that's not happened here. The principle of whether the technology process has changed enough to warrant that is a little disappointing in that the new process was touted as being fresh and integral to the future of the Polaris range, but if the old cards can work with the new BIOS' then the process is very, very similar, at least from an outsiders perspective.
 
I think I'd sooner simply do a mild OC on the 480 rather than a BIOS flash. Not sure I see the point if the only thing that's different is clock speed.

We don't have a large enough sample size to know if this is stable for all cards, it is early days yet.

Wouldn't it be a possible scenario that after a while gaming with the extra heat they'd just clock back to a basic 480?

Not a bad idea to try if you have a card with dual Bio's

I'm surprised AdoredTV didn't show this in his review of the 580 as he has a 480 as well and usually details these less obvious aspects that are actually very interesting and pertinent. His observations of Chill were very good though.
 
It's a new generation process, not an entirely new process. So it shouldn't cause any bricking of GPUs.
However flashing it is completely useless. You will end up not being able to run any high clocks like these new 580's are. You might be able to go a little further than before, but really it isn't worth the risk, especially since the new chips are on a better process with better PCBs. Only thing you gain is probably a new memory state from the BIOS to help reduce power consumption with multi monitors.
 
BigMaMaInHouse a user at Guru3d successfully flashed his to 570 and posted some of his results on his card. He did see an increase in performance. Not far off from the new fabricated series cards.
