Lets just hope the cooler isnt another leafblower.
Probably you didn't get my point. If the r9 380x is just a 290x, than what's the point of launching a new GPU which is a factor in global warming again? The gtx 970 is somewhere between the 780 and 780ti, but it has all the benefits of the Maxwell architecture, while this 380x/290x won't because it's old. It's such a bummer.
Going to HBM alone will save a lot of power. I imagine the 390X is the 300W part with hybrid cooler, in which case the fact that they managed to go from 290X (290W TDP) to 390X (300W) with an almost whopping 32% core increase is amazing.
I find it far more impressive than the 30% more efficient that maxwell is. It will technically be as power efficient, if not more than maxwell. It will just be more power hungry too, which personally, I am happy with. I am disappointed with maxwell so far as there is a very small performance increase overall, especially at high resolutions.
Assuming there is no change other than raw core count and it scales linearly, we are talking 3% more power usage for 32% more power!
I know that 300W is high, but as long as they are cooled ok they will be fine. It's perfectly acceptable to run 2 290X in a rig if they have aftermarket coolers, so it will be fine for these too.
Nvidia seriously need to throw the expensive price tags out the window, Swallow their pride, Bring something out that is either on par with AMD's new 3xx series in both price and performance or Nvidia might actually start to lose marketshare this time around as I'm hoping people this time around start to vote with their wallets.
I doubt people will start voting with their wallets any time soon, I'm still waiting for it to happen in the gaming industry...but hey hardware is much more expensive so maybe there is some hope.
Maybe I'm mistaken but I find that uninformed people more often than not, will take the more expensive product as the absolute superior one and not give a second look to the other product, no matter if it's in the same "league" with almost or identical performance. Not talking only about computer parts either.
Nvidia will release a card that is faster than the 390X but only by 5% but it'll cost 1-200 hundred more than the 390X and idiots will pay it, I REALLY hope this time around more and more people vote with their wallets.
You're asking people who blame AMD GPUs for breaking their £30 unrated PSU and thus taking their computers with it to think straight![]()
I think one of the main things, as with previous generations. It's very easy to compare GPU's to GPU's and comment on their performance and cost. But when you compare cards for cards AMD look a little less favorable, without a waterblock their really aren't may 290X cards I would want to own. nVidia on the other hand with 780Ti's from reference to classified they are all lovely products. Please don't try and take this statement objectively, i'm not trying to compare performance here just the overall impression, that is what AMD need to step forward with the next generation. The 'GPU' even right now is awesome, the 290X stacks up well against the 9XX series.

If you seen the Nvidia Engineer video, then you know that it was no joke when he said people returned their 970 and bought a 980. A lot of people are so brand loyal, Nvidia could put out a card that was 5% slower than AMD and cost $100.00 more and they would still buy it no questions asked.
Sure they might get some fluctuation, but with the amount of corporate customers, Nvidia is not going to loose any sleep.
Hell no, Gonna be sticking with the 980 until Nvidia bring out a better version, Titans not included though.
Okay... surely I've missed some stuff. Dice didn't you have the AMD 295x2 last time I checked, now you've got 980?
What made you switch if I may ask?...
It was actually a downgrade going from the 295X2 to the 980 in terms of raw performance but the 295X2 is more suited to 1440P and greater resolutions, 4K ideally and seeing as I only play at 1080P 144Hz it was utterly wasted on me.
I am curious, what was your GPU utilization like with that setup?
To be honest I never checked, I do know however that my frames were silly high ^_^
No guys, no.

Hehe, was just waiting for that one...
