AMD and Nvidia have been releasing a lot of rebrands this generation, with AMD filling all but the high end R9 290 and R9 290X with rebranded HD 7000 series cards, from the R9 280X all the way down to the lowly R7 250.
At present AMD have a gap between their R9 270X and R9 280X GPUs, which are priced at around £150 and £240 respectively. How do AMD fill this gap in the market, HD 7950 refresh of course.
Here we have the R9 280.
The R9 280 is the same 7950 we had last generation, from the Stream processor count of 1792, the ROP count of 32 and the same 3GB of VRAM.
This card is expected to come to market at around $250, or around £180 here in the UK.
So far the R9 280 cards from ASUS, Sapphire and XFX have been leaked.
The R9 280 DirectCU II Top looks identical to the R9 280X DC2 TOP, the difference being the the reduction in core count moving to the 280/7950 GPU under the cooler.
Sapphire will be coming to the take with their Dual-X cooler which includes several large copper heat pipes.
I can't help but be disappointed by blue PCB which I believe ruins the otherwise good looks of this GPU Sapphire has made.
Last but not least we have the XFX R9 280 Double Dissipation, a card which like the ASUS and Sapphire models look exactly the same as the previously released 280X variants.
We should be seeing official announcements of these cards within the next few weeks.
What do you guys think of the R9 280, are you guys happy with the a new option in the £150-£200 GPU market?
Now with all the gaps in the AMD lineup now filled we maybe now can look forward to something new from AMD, perhaps a dual GPU R9 card or GCN 2.0? only time will tell.
