AMD Phenom II 1045t

Hey, I am trying to overclock a AMD Phenom II 1045t on an Asus M5A78L-M LX, from 2.7GHz up to 3GHz or 3.1GHz.

I'm not going to go into my failed attempts at changing settings and other bits and pieces, because one of said attempts resulted in my vrm being fried and having to buy a new board.

If anyone could give me any advice on the subject it would be greatly appreciated, as I have little knowledge on the subject using this board and cpu. I've only had success with an intel system a little while back.

When I had an 1100T which is close'ish to your CPU, I followed this guide -

Hey man, I looked at those videos, and my BIOS is unlike either of them. There is no AI tweaker on my BIOS. Half of the settings I see in the video aren't there either.

Please advise if possible

"half the settings are not there" doesnt really help us what so ever dude. Post up some shots of your bios would be a great start.

But looking at the links you cant overclock with that board

It is almost definitely your motherboard.
The Asus M5A78L-M LX only has a 4 pin CPU power and is rated for CPU's up to 95w.
There are 4 different versions of this board, 3 rated @95w and only the M5A78L-M LX V2
is rated for 125w.
Overclocking that 6 core cpu will use far more power than the board can handle. :flamed:

That board does not have a heatsink for the VRM and there does not seem to be a aftermarket one you could buy for that board....(I replaced mine of my M5a88v-evo with a Thermalright HR-09)
You can buy mini stick-on passive heatsinks , but I personally would not hold much trust in them staying in place.......

The options are just not there in the BIOS - he needs to get a better board
 
I'll look into buying another board then. This is my back up PC after all. The persistent power cuts here render me paranoid of something happening to my main PC
 
There are not many (if at all) decent Matx AM socket boards out there....
Could you fit a normal ATX board in your case instead??
 
Isn't there a OCKey feature on the bios that will make the power on key oc the cpu? I know it's "noobish" but it's the best thing he has for now.

If you are looking for a new board there are boards like ASUS M5A97 or MSI's 970A-G46 that aren't the top of the line but will support an overclock
 
I had the Matx Gigabyte GA-LMT78-USB3 which was surprisingly packed with Overclockability even with full individual core control including core unlockers, down side is its age and the colour of the board.

I wouldn't personally overclock an 8 core on anything amd and mATX. Unless I've forgotten one. The power delivery tends to be pretty poor.

-edit- again, this is based on my experience/what I've read about AM3+ and bulldozer/Piledriver. I never had any real experiences with the X6 OCing wise.
 
I don't know if this has happened to Tom too but when the 8350 came out, AMD send reviewers some chips that could OC to 5Ghz.... Imagine what that Overclockability points the chip got, although most chips reach 4.8 on air MAX
