AMD officially announces the HD7990

Titan is nothing more then scrapped silicon from Tesla.

EEeeeeyup. Yet another rebadged server product that we fall for hook line and sinker.

I read an article recently on Kepler and how nothing even really uses the core functions it introduced. Madness really.

Near on all desktop parts are simply server/workstation hand-me-downs.

Luiz vuition (a writer) once said that to gauge what's coming to the desktop market all you need to do is take a look at what's going on at the business end. Ne'er a truer word spoken tbh.

i don't see the problem with rebranded server parts. real server parts cost a fortune. if they do just fine for gaming then it's all okay imo., i mean what do you expect? quadro cards for 200€?

Yup, hence the name "Titan," after the supercomputer that was utilizing this tech beforehand. Not necessarily a problem per say, just far too much hype and WAY too expensive for it to be a realistically achievable goal for most people. The only time you'd see reasonable use of something like Titan, or even a 7990/690 really is under heavy compute loads using programs OTHER than gaming.

On the other hand, were it not for these products coming out, we would never get anywhere else, would we x-)? Then the companies would stop making money, then go under, then we'd really be screwed.

^^ I agree.
Titan at gaming is nice, but I'd never want one for that.
I'd much rather get a 670 or even a 7870 XT/Tahiti LE.
If I would ever get into benching, however... :p

Titan in gaming to me is a disappointment. Whether or not it was hyperbole I don't know but people actually expected it to be a lot better than it was. This is down to the old server rebadge - nothing much of what it does is used for gaming.

This is why server hand me downs are not anywhere near as good as people think they are. All they are is a part that has been cut down or rebadged and then tossed to us on the proviso that they are going to make great gaming parts.

Faildozer, Pilemiser, you name it. Sure, if 8 cores ever do get utilised properly they'll be onto something but once again it was nothing but a server product being pushed onto the gaming market.

It's clearly evident that when a company sits down and makes ACTUAL products for gaming (see also GK 104) and cut out all the crap? they're quite amazing.

Nvidia weren't expecting anywhere near as much from GK104 but they soon learnt that cutting out the kitchen sink server crap allowed for massive clock speeds.

GK110 is similar to Fermi in many ways and people, IMO, are getting a bit excited over it. Like Fermi in gaming it's disappointing. Can't even get within 30% of a £600 dual GPU set up.

Indeed. I bought mine not for gaming but for BOINC and other computing stuff. Still overpriced, but much more suited for that since that's what it was actually bloody designed for in the first place, and not producing pretty pictures of polygons at highest possible framerates. What a waste

Has anyone seen the latest 'leaked' benchmarks. Saw them on Tom's Hardware. Are they a load of bulls***? I hope not.

I had a quick look at some and they appear about right. Two 7970s @ 1ghz should beat the 690 and Titan quite comfortably.

The problem of course is Runt and Dropped frames. So whilst AMD can claim their figures are accurate any one in the know will know better.

If you take a look at the benchmark thread that Kambo and I have been testing in the results are as you should expect. His cards beat mine, but, as we know that's only half of the story. He complains about issues with Tomb Raider.

So no doubt when the card comes out and it gets reviewed it will no doubt beat any other single PCB card. But as I said that's only half of the story. Any one with the knowledge needed now will avoid it like a dose of the clap.

Edit. There's already extensive testing for the theoretical 7990 here.

Oddly enough today I had a rough day.. My fiancee needed an op to shoot dye into her head due to her stroke so I was up at 6am.

By 10 I was wrigging in my seat so I went down to the WHSmith in the hospital and bought a Custom PC and a PCformat.

The Custom PC was a great read, had a sweet SSD group test. The PCformat I bought because it was Titan/Titan SLI as well as loads of other SLI/CFX set ups.

They were jizzing all over Crossfire and slating SLI. I guess they haven't realised that Crossfire is borked. Really bad when they find out as the article made me bloody cringe.

It's a step in the right direction, but I still have my doubts. AMD are very sneaky when it comes down to advertising and benchmarks. I'm glad a third-party reviewed this, which makes it a bit more credible but I want to see the performance that the actual consumers are going to get.

If AMD is able to get a passable, beta version of this driver out to consumers in the mid-summer time frame as I am expecting, it will make the HD 7990 a much more appealing option for those people that want to spend $1000 on graphics cards. Not only that, but it will improve the performance of CrossFire users across the board and THAT is the reason we are writing our Frame Rating series and why we wanted to be sure to have this article ready for you as well. Pushing AMD to make these changes will help the community at large, and that was our goal.

Bit of a shame that first you have to wait months for your card, then more months for proper drivers and once it's all good the new 8xxx series will probably be out.

The left is exactly what I experienced with my 7870 crossfire setup catalyst 12.11 beta. luled sold both cards and grabbed a 7970. Hopefully these drivers will be out in time for the next Never Settle O_O!

I'll just throw this in here as well :D

Goes very much in the right direction

I tell you what that makes me very happy yet very sad.

Mostly down to human nature I guess.

Ryan has brought this problem to light. He's worked tirelessly to get it fixed whilst all the time being slagged off and even threatened by the same assholes this will actually help.

That article says it all, AMD are listening. Which of course is what we all really want deep down.
