AMD officially announces the HD7990

Hi there :oc3d:!
During the Game Developer Conference, AMD has officialy announced the HD7990.
Though we had the Devil 13 card, the Club3D 7990 and the Ares II, AMD had never announced a reference 7990.
It's unknown what GPUs AMD will solder on their card, and at what clockspeed they're clocked, but AMD has arrived that the card will get a different configuration over the unofficial 7990s.
The codename from the not-reference cards are: New Zealand, whilst the AMD card will be codenamed: "Malta".
AMD has announced that the card will be cooled by 3x 90mm fans, which should make the card silent and cool, according to AMD.
Also, the card requires 2 8Pin PCI-E power cables, and will only be a 2 slot card, like the Ares 2.
The HD7990 is going to be the competitor for the GTX Titan, AMD said.

^^ I know right, where I read it, it said: "maar de kaart moet het opnemen tegen Nvidia's Titan" = but the card should be competing against Nvidia's Titan.
Dual GPU card vs. Single GPU card. Seems legit :p
I hope it's a typo and they meant the GTX 690.

errrrrrr,How is it a rival for Titan, when Titan is a single GPU and this is a dual, this thing should be aimed at the 690.

Stop it AMD,you are looking stupid if you try and get away with this.

A dual GPU card can never be compared to a single GPU card due to the issues, no matter how small.

So if that's what they're doing then it's definitely noobish.

Indeed!
I still hope to see a "Phenom III" from AMD in the future, that might just be their savior. Bulldozer is crap. Piledriver is crap (compared to intel!). Where are you going AMD?

I would never discount BD or PD as 'crap'. Ahead of its time? maybe....

When it came out it all came down to single core performance which it lacks. However, AMD were using hindsight in the same way they did when they released their AMD 64 chips. They were laughed at by Intel and for a while they had good reason to laugh. Then when Windows XP came out and supported them properly they really kicked ass.

90% of the problem with BD and PD is that hardly anything uses them properly so it comes back to the single threaded performance. However, as I've seen said before - go and buy me an 8 core Intel and tell me how much change you get from a grand.

In other words dude, give PD some time to actually be used for what it was intended to be used for. You may find yourself very surprised. At the end of the day an I7 has four physical cores and four logical ones that offer about 30% or so of the performance of a physical core. The AMD has 8 cores.

Right now the PD does stand above the 3570k in things such as Handbrake encoding and so on. Nothing very exciting for the gamer but when games finally make use of the cores you could see a nice turnaround.

Bottom line is an 8 core PD chip can be had very cheaply and is more than sufficient to game on (even though for the most part most of it sits redundant) but AMD aren't out of the race.

@AlienALX: you have a very good point, but also, 8-Cores is just unneeded for everyday use.
Also, thanks for that pcworld link! I've put it in the Original Post. With credits to you of course :)

Yes but what I'm saying is that one day 8 cores will be of use. If you look at the 990x it gets its ass handed to it in gaming by a 2700k. Mostly because Sandy overclocks so well but also because of the better core performance and the fact that the 990x has six cores that hardly ever get used in games.

Honestly, if the software was there to support it the PD would be a great CPU to have. Give it time. Obviously by the time it does work and is fully supported it'll be a bit late but once software does swing to supporting cores (and as many as you can throw at it) AMD will be standing quite well.

^^ Agreed. Though it's indeed ahead of it's time. By the time 8-cores is the new standard, this will (probably) be massively outdated. Also, the architecture isn't really as good as it could be. But hey, I'm not dissing AMD, in fact I'm using an AMD system atm, but I'm just saying that intel has the lead market share atm. :)

It's 4 Modular cores with 4 mini cores in each modular. All it really is, Is AMD's solution around Intel's patent of Hyper Threading.

AMD's future is Heterogeneous System Architecture which is all resources in a computer working together to get operations complete. The technology inside the Playstation 4 is exactly what that is. Hopefully we see it come to us desktop users with the release of FM3 APU's Codenamed Kaveri rumor is it will have GDDR5 on the motherboards.

it has always been like that, nvidia has the architecture and amd has the cores. it will beat the titan, no question, but it will probably double your electricity bill lol.
still it's a bit pathetic considering that it is nothing new and that they initially had plans for the 8xxx series in december 2012, still they release a 7990 4 months after that.

I guess they need to answer Titan in any way they can. It's pretty telling really if the best they can do is to make a heat and power sandwich and say it's their answer to Titan.

This card should have been released on day one tbh, just like the 690.

You'd almost think that AMD spends less money doing research and making better cards than the amount of money they give game developers to make the game optimized for AMD GPUs :(
