AMD to use Globalfoundries for 28nm GPUs, says paper

EDN; Jessie Shen, DIGITIMES [Friday 20 August 2010]

A Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report has cited unnamed market sources indicating that AMD has selected Globalfoundries' 28nm process for its next generation of graphics processors.

AMD has been working with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) on its 40nm and 65nm GPUs.

EDN said that TSMC declined to comment on market speculations.

TSMC has secured contract orders for 28nm products from Altera, Fujitsu Microelectronics and Qualcomm, and most recently Xilinx. The foundry chipmaker has introduced three HKMG processes, 28HP, 28HPM and 28HPL, and one conventional SiON process, 28LP and moved the latter node to volume production in June.

It's crazy how fast technology evolves. Just go back to '07 and look at what the very best was then and then go back to now and see what the very best is now. Crazy...

Yeah it has forwarded alot within a couple of years. It's now gotten to the point where you buy something brand new off the line then they annouce a much better and faster product thats coming out in 3 months.

It's no surprise really. In 07 it was all about power power power. No one cared about how much you would use and no one cared about how hot things would get. The attitude now though is different. People are prepared to give up utter raw power and speed for something that's cooler and uses less electricity.

So I am all for this new nm process tbh. Hats off.

I mean honestly in my hey day (old git mode well and truly ON) no one even knew how powerful their PSU was. It just was not something you even needed to take into consideration. A good psu was heavy and solid with nice thick wires, but no one boasted on the wattage like they do now. It's actually a bit crazy how people gleefully boast about having a 1000w PSU like it's a good thing. Sheesh, I'd hate to be paying their leccy bills !

And just like petrol power is something that unless we go all nuclear will not last forever and will continue to become more expensive.

/miserable boring old Doris mode off.

Oh my god, I've just aged twenty years reading that alien. Only jesting, know exactly where your coming from.

Still got a 1kw psu though, my excuse is the recycling will cost more.

Electric bill is blamed on the kids leaving every sodding electric appliance on in the house at the same time, tv's consoles, radios. Arrrrrrrrgh I sound like alien - what have you done!

Money talks and BS walks man. I only started worrying about the cost of everything when the bills came with my name on
