AMD claims the gaming crown with its Ryzen 5000 series of processors

Honestly I think I would actually be wasting my money, It has a 20% perf boost over Zen 2 at 1080P, I don't play at 1080P, I play at 3440x1440 so I'm pretty sure I'd see zero gain.

It really depends on the game. Far Cry 4 can be CPU limited at high resolutions with today's graphics cards.

Underwhelmed.

Not even so much I thought it would be better, but the fact they are now literally competing with themselves and have managed to shove up the prices.

Don't get me wrong it's impressive, but is it impressive enough in anything else other than low res gaming to really justify itself? I don't think so.

Sure, you might shave a few seconds from a render, but they are not cheap.

Also £300 for their entry level gaming CPU? yeah, too much IMO. The 10600k is cheaper (£248 as I type this).

I guess the real big impressive lift will be 5nm. I was just expecting too much out of this perhaps? IDK.

Price for the 6 core imo is to much. If they wanted to up the price, they should have talked about a 4 core model at a lower price point.

Other than price it is fairly impressive and a bigger gain than I was expecting.

So.....what happened to the number 4000? These should be called the 4000 series....not 5000...

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here, but as far as my understanding goes, they have the 4000 series inside of laptops. So using that for desktop would be rather confusing for their customers.

So going with the 5000 series naming, makes a more of a diversity in their product line and hence less confusing.

Yep the namimg is to seperate it from laptops.

As for the pricing idk what people were expecting, they are way ahead they were always going to charge more, the price while being higher is at least giving you value when compared to the last gen.

I'm personally happy on my 1700, thou i am pleased that progress is being made and i'm sure Intel are unhappy about losing single threaded performance.

The price was always going to be higher once they beat Intel.

Colour me surprised that a corporation also hikes their prices when they claim their product is the best in market.

I just think £300 for an "entry level" 6 core CPU is too much.

I've never been that bothered about CPU gaming performance. Certainly not enough to rush out and buy a new CPU for gaming. They just don't make that much of a difference.

£300 is a lot for the 6 core, especially when you can get an 8 core from last gen for cheaper i just checked scans prices, having the newest always comes at a price, hence why i picked up a 1700 for less than £150 when the zen+ came out.

I'd expect the 6 core once converted price wise to be sub £250 thou, still not cheap tbh.

It's even more ball sacky when you realise the two 4/8 CPUs they released a little while back ago that were supposedly ace for gaming have sorta not arrived.

One thing I do respect is their, seemingly very honest, benchmarks.

I really wanted to be excited by this but none of it was really surprising.

Makes rocket lake seem fairly promising in comparison, as AMD now seems neck and neck with Skylake architecture gaming wise.

11th gen laptop chips showed some proper IPC gains, despite sticking to 14nm.

It was exactly what i expected, but you don't need the latest and greatest CPU to enjoy gaming, I just upgrade when i feel the need had a long time between chip upgrades.

They are real straight with the numbers thou, i don't think your see them over promise on anything, they can't afford the backlash, you only need to look at the fact the share price 5 years ago was $2 now it's like $80 consitently it's a major turn around for them they were so close to going belly up.

Same go's for the GPU side thou i honestly feel if your GPU is decent and upto date, you don't need a new card, but for some of us we do, upgrading every generation is just a waste of cash better to save it for when the upgrade is double the performance least worth it then.

The funny part is that no doubt they will slash their previous gen CPU prices like they always do which will make their new ones seem even more expensive.

I'd expect the older stock to drop in price, my next upgrade is most likely the last generation of ZEN once they move to the next ark and it's dropped a little, but they will want to shift the old stock so the price drops are normal but it's not like the last gen are bad chips by any means :)

I would think that many 3900x+ owners would skip this round.

Let's face it, when you have either the 3900x or 3950x you ain't a pogger playing at 1080p. Anything above that the difference was negligible any way, and most who bought 12 core or 16 core CPUs would have done so for reasons other than gaming.

They need to be careful IMO. Charging £300 for your entry level gaming CPU is pretty brazen, given that many on an entry level budget don't even have much more than that to spec out an entire PC.

They'll just shove more people onto consoles. Maybe they don't care? IDK. I suppose they do need to be very careful and in a way have been for many years because where are the amazing APUs we were promised that should defecate all over the consoles? oh yeah, they never arrived. Just el cheapo rubbish ones for a hundred quid.

They didn't release their entry level gaming CPU yet, though. non-X 5600 is coming for sure.

Steve @ GN was allowed to directly ask AMD questions regarding the launch. He specifically asked about lower tier CPUs and from the sound of it they gave him the cold shoulder.

Soo, I don't know if they intend to keep the 3000 series around at the lower end now or what. But £300 for a 6/12 CPU is too much. I don't care how good it is because most of the time it's only 5% or so faster than the 10600k. They can compare it to the 10900k to make it look cheaper all they like but we all know that highly clocked 6 core CPUs are where it is at. That is why they kept losing to Intel on gaming.

Right now the 3600 is £189 on Amazon. The 3600x is £199. So that's a £100 price increase. Yeah, right. To f**k get.

I can understand the £50 on the top tier CPUs. I can. However, £100 on the lowest denominator? haha yeah up ya bum.

They are now at the point where they are competing with themselves, and are winning/losing very well.
