AMD today AMD shows their new 'ambidextrous computing" solution which will create ARM and x86 APUs chips which are pin compatible.

Dubbed Project Skybridge, this will allow users to have a motherboards that supports or runs both ARM and x86.

This design framework is a family of products on the 20nm process and will use Puma+ CPU cores on the x86 side and A57 on the ARM side.

They will feature HSA as well as AMD GCN (Graphics Core Next) graphics architecture and will be Android compatible, the first product from AMD to do so.

Though AMD’s meeting today was heavy on Seattle and what it means for the server market, the company has said that Skybridge will target the client/embedded markets and release in 2015, to be clear this product is not made with servers in mind.

AMD also talked briefly about its plans for 2016, which will see the company debut its own custom-developed 64-bit ARM core. AMD didn’t offer much information but said the 64-bit ARMv8 CPU core will be in servers and embedded solutions along with semi-custom and ultra low power client devices.

The ability to make boards both ARM and x86 compatible will be great for AMD entering the tablet market, with minimal effort required for manufacturers to build ARM or x86 based tablets without editing the design, apart from changing the CPU.

The more interesting thing from the pc desktop enthusiast's point of view from AMD's announcement is that there's a new high performance x86 core from AMD coming in 2016.

AMD's execs noted that these are high-frequency, high-performance CPU cores that will span the range from laptops to desktops to servers—and not just "microservers."

Begs the question do us folk rocking FX-8350's or higher have to wait until then for a new high performance FX chip?

well i did post something about this the other day, though the source was in question which yeah i could see why. though with this coming to light, maybe there was some truth to that story ^_^. i look forward to hearing more on this upcoming x86 chip from amd, not sure if i will be able to wait until 2016 until i upgrade though hahahaha

Yeah I don't know about waiting until 2016 either. :p I mean I was tempted to grab a Z87 motherboard and i7 last week. Although I think I'll wait until DDR4 at the earliest now anyway; I might give Haswell-E a look late this year/early next year.

I also don't know if we'll see a pure CPU from AMD again, I imagine it's all APUs from now, which isn't really a problem really if we get more CPU performance.

yeah i have been eying up a haswel e x99 upgrade for a little while now, i bet it would destroy my bank account though, puls i am supposed to be saving up for a new motorbike haha.

Ditto that, except I'm planning on treating myself to a (brand) new car this year, so dropping a large amount of cash on what is a completely unnecessary upgrade isn't going to help that. :D
