AMD 8970 Pictured

In addition to the picture, the site has also leaked alleged specifications of the Radeon HD 8970 GPU. According to them, the GPU is powered by the 28nm Curacao XT core which features 2304 stream processors, 48 Raster operators and a 3 GB GDDR5 memory running along a 384-bit wide interface. The core operates at 1000 MHz or 1 GHz clock speed while the memory is configured at 6500 MHz or 6.5 GHz effective frequency. The TDP of the card is a bit higher than the Radeon HD 7970 at 250W compared to 210W.The picture itself is quiet surprising, the card may look shorter than its predecessor HD 7970 but infact is around the same length and has a design scheme similar to the Radeon HD 7990. The side pattern and the fans are the same ones used on the Radeon HD 7990 so it could be a cut down version of the cooler we saw on AMD’s dual chip mammoth.

sad thing is, unless they completely fix the drivers by the release, they'll lose sales

and i got a funny feeling, this thing is gonna be HOT!

AMD had already stated that they wanted to release their 8xxx series cards with better stock coolers cause the ones they have now were utter crap. I did not see this coming though, I must admit that it looks nice :)

+1 on the driver thing.

^^ yeah, drivers are a problem atm, and I'm more excited for the 760 Ti and the 8950, but I don't think it'll be that hot. At least they've made positive changes to their cooler.

Somehow not surprised with the design. I expected them to copy the 7990 design when i read this artikel. (Sorry too lazy for google translate :D)

I just hope they will release them in the not too distant future, so i can get the 8950 or 8870 to replace my 6950. Hopefully they will keep on the never seattle bundle. I have heard some rumors that they will include BF4 and Watch Dogs.

It probably will be hot, but...
If this is the reference design, with 2 fans it will hopefully be quieter.

Previous reference AMD cards have been terribly loud. Kinda puts you in a position of going aftermarket cooler and most likely never being able to watercool it or anything, or going reference and watercooling from the start. Hopefully this will be more of a middle ground at least, and it's great to see AMD putting more effort into their coolers.

I'm waiting on the 8000 series before I decide on which card to upgrade to, i'm not buying Nvida till I know how the new AMD cards stack up against them.

I'm hoping the 8000 series is better than the Nvid 700 series, seen as the AMD cards are a new architecture and the Nvidia cards are just the same as the 600 series.

The TDP isn't much higher, so I wouldn't expect them to be much hotter than the current 7970 is either. I wouldn't be buying a reference cooler anyway, after market all the way :D

Looking at the picture i am actually disappointed in the stock cooler, for a card that is going to be pushing at the 770 and 780 it looks a lot cheaper than both of them regarding design. Specs on the other hand and performance will be what matter in the end as there will be no shortage of waterblocks and aftermarket coolers for them.

Overall interesting to see how AMD respond with their drivers and for the sake of AMD, the industry and price wars i hope this is a stormer.

^^ you would be upgrading? Your GPU is still really capable mate ;)

Because Haswell wasn't worth upgrading to i've decided to get a new GPU instead :D

My 7950 runs 90% of games maxed as it is but I have a feeling the next gen titles coming out soon will need that bit more power :)

Yeah good point :)
And I think the extra power might indeed come in handy :)

Nice to see AMD aren't standing still on the GPU landscape, and that they're gearing up to answer nVidia's 700 series.

Although I'll most likely be skipping this generation having picked my 7950 boost just recently which is eating my games thus far. I normally tend to skip two generations upon upgrading. I went from a 4870 to a GTX 560 to a 7950 boost.

What's wrong with the drivers!?!? Haven't had a single problem with my 7970, been running it since Jan. >.<

Extra power is always handy to have! ;)

I'll be sticking with my 7970 Matrix, not much will be able to make me part with this card, I love it.

its more crossfire driver problems than single card, without crossfire my 7970 is a beast!! but using corssfire is a headache!!

google amd runt frames, have a read....its rather interesting

i hope this is bs, because that card doesn't look good. especially compared with nvidia. this looks like a cooler you would stick on a midrange card, there is no style to it, it doesn't look elegant.

I have to agreed nVidia upped their game a fair bit to the point where the stock cooler will probably look better and probably perform just as good than 90% of the vendor coolers on a 770/780, which is a very smart move on nvidias part makes more of a brand image wouldnt surprise me if they been taking hints from apple and product homogenisation

And amd fix your drivers with the 7970 crossfire issues before you start releasing other stuff didnt spend more money to buy 2 cards so the performances becomes worse lol

Odd I thought AMD were suppose to have a dye shrunk for this coming series?
Maybe this is the 8870?

or maybe that dye shrunk GCN2 is a lot more power then they thought? Hoping it's not a rushed release. Perhaps a new number scheme to pop out of nowhere. Or that that will end up being hd 9000. Infinite possibilities.
