All HDMI cables the same?

you guys got me thinking this morning reading this and i popped over to my sony centre with a £4 asda cable in my back pocket and no poo these guys are stupid over there. we looked at a 50" screen and asked what cable they used and they said a £100 HDMAI gold plated blah blah blah cable 0_o. it was only 1/2 a foot away from the system. So we made them think we were buying it and swapped it out for my asda cable ... and there was no difference what so ever.

Honestly.

The guy's face dropped (as my smile grew) and i came out with "with advice like that and you think im going to buy a TV off you" and walked out and left the cable in place lol ....

Im no expert but i can see if some thing is better or not. been gaming for god knows how long and you soon can tell if some thing is better quality.

(and no im not going to get my daughter involved in it lol)

I don't think we're claiming a difference in quality for normal high def mate, it's just a lot of the cheaper cables don't carry a proper full HD signal for picture and sound. I would never advocate buying a £100 1mtr cable, the Sony shop are always a rip-off.

However, with longer cables of 5mtr+ you may see the cheaper cables really start to fail. Certainly I know a few pro installers who always buy decent quality HDMI cables if they are longer as the cheap ones don't cut it.

And as I said, analogue cable is another thing altogether

@Nismo - glad you agree mate. Excellent cables and superb, personal service. Can't beat them.

to be honest that all ways been the same cheaper cables at length fail as such but that depends on the brands. You can all ways make you own cheaper than any thing out there with better shielding for more than 1/50th the price of some cables.

It does depend on brands sure, but there's usually a reason cheap cable is cheap, corners are cut somewhere. For instance, I've had cheap cable run alongside some power cable and had massive interference from it. Run a branded cable and no problems at all.

You can make your own, sure, but how many people can actually do that? Not many is the answer. It also takes quite a lot of time which many of us don't have ;)

Don't buy from Comet or any other high street store. Get it from a specialist online. You'll pay the same that way for a great deal as you would for a cheapy quality pos from highstreet. Fact

Hi there, I was reading through this post, I've just recently brought a Thor 5M HDMI/DVI Connection Kit to connect my HD4890 to my TV, Was it a worth while buy? The actual lead comes with 2 HDMI / DVI convertors, so I can use it for other perposes..

Just wandering what your "professional" opinion on the lead was ^_~

ShadowEW (not nit picking here but) the rules are in place not only for your protection but all so ours. we must all abide by them. so please don't just to get around them by removing the www. from a link.

As for the cable how ever we cannot comment on some thing we dont own or have tested as such. The best person to say if it was a good buy is you self. You own it and if its a real bargain then just let every one know. (once you get you post count up a little more to post real links).

P.s i fully understand if can be annoying now allowing to post links but we all have the same problem. Just give it time.

Sorry mayhem, i'll remove the link..

I was only wandering about the quality of the lead itself, as this is my first HDMI cable, I don't really know what to look out for =(

I can't actually tell the difference between the HDMI cable and the perpose built DVI cable at the moment O_o

signature over load.

Im only pointing out what the mods would, trying to help you keep you nose clean mate.

Just have a quick read through the rules and you'll be fine. The admins are not strict as such on here as long as rules are followed. In fact this is a dammed fine forum and many people have different views but every one gets along.

As for the cable had a quick look its looks fine as they say as long as its shilded over long distace then it will be oky.

One thing people do for get is than when placing any data cable next to a power cable it should never run parallel. Data cables should only cross over a power cable at 90 degrease and never run parallel. (cisco training ;) )

*looks at wall mount with cable management that only allows those two to be parallel*

Works fine though, both for my DVI (fairly high quality, bought it off kemp and is a bugger to bend :p) and vga cables.

EDIT: and please cut down on the signature before one of the mods beats you to it.

Whilst true in theory, it's not really plausible for most people. However, if a cable is properley shielded then there won't be an issue

@Monkey - yeah that DVI cable is a top notch one, Belkin Pro :)

My hdmi to dvi is this and my ps3 hdmi cable is some make woolworths sold to me for like £8 reduced from £12. Havent had any issues, mind you they are both a little over 1m and go straight to the appliance

TBH in the last few months, working as a Video Applications Engineer, I've found HDMI cables to be no different.
