Advice on upgrading my aging pc

My current system:

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3700+ Socket 939 San Diego

Mobo: Asus A8N-VM

Gfx Card: EVGA Nvidia GF 7800GT 256Mb

Memory: Corsair 1GB Kit (2x512MB) DDR 400MHz/PC3200 XMS Memory + 1x1gb - Not running dual channel

PSU: Hiper 480W Type-R Black

OS:WinXP

This has lasted me 3 years, but now it's time to upgrade.

As you can see im still on DDR memory and not running in dual channel mode. There probably isnt much point in buying more DDR memory, it costs more than DDR2 and probably wont be around much longer.

I can probably spend around £200, so Ive been looking at getting a good mobo, ie Gigabyte GA-MA790X-DS4 790X Socket AM2+ along with AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+

And probably something like OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC6400 Titanium Memory CL4(4-4-4-15)

I mostly play WoW, so I dont need any thing to beefy and I'm not really into overclocking, cant afford any thing to go wrong ;)

Also i've always had AMD, plus it's cheaper than Intel.

Cheers.

James.

Hmm difficult one.

The gigabyte ds4 is a nice board, have built two computers with it. Worked without a hitch, but haven't looked into overclocking. DDR indeed isn't a wise investment.

I'd also look at a gpu if I were you, something like the ATi 4670 or nVidia 9600GSO, I think that would boost your game performance pretty well too, even on your current cpu/mobo combination.

That motherboard has a good set of features on it and will also support AM3 based CPUs, but if you're not planning on overclocking you could spend less on a mobo. Bare in mind that dropping a AM2 cpu into a AM2+ motherboard, the hypertransport speed will drop from from 5200MHz to 2000MHz, not that you won't have a fast system, it's just something to keep in mind.
