Advice Gratefully Received...

Hi

Complete newbie here, happen to have 2 prometeia Mach II's (one stuffed as I appear to have been partially scammed on ebay), bought a Althlon 64 kit many moons ago from EPC, never got around to fitting it. Just bought a Q6600 g0, thought I would have a go at fitting one - I have a 775 kit from an ebay purchase. Decided to practice on one of my other PC's first. I had a number of issues where the PC would refuse to even power up when the prommy head was on the chip, but as soon as I stripped it all off it powered up fine. Eventually I got things going, was trying to "force" the USB driver install in Vista when the PC shut off. The motherboard is dead (the cpu is fine), no marks on it but no beeps when I start it up. I followed the manual, so no grease etc - forgot about this board!! :(

So...a few questions after this novel:

1. What could have caused this? Condensation? Any typical things?

2. The sides of the prommy head were cold but the top was quite warm - is this usual?

3. The prommy head itself seemed to melt (?) a little - so that the top plastic came off and there is a gap where you can see down into the head. Did I do something wrong?

4. I put the sticky rubber stuff on any motherboard "bits" (technical term huh?!?) that were to be under the compartments back and front - good idea or not?

Problem is I'm a bit reluctant to try this again, can't afford to lose too many motherboards!! Any insight on the above would be great.

Cheers

1: Yes,condensation is the usual suspect when a mobo won't post after being under phase, although, they are not always dead.Sometimes after a day or 2 to dry out in a airing cupboard, they will come back from the dead.

2: Yes,there is a heater pad in the head, which will create the heat you can feel, perfectly normal.

3: I have heard of the plastic coming off before,it is not supposed too,but i doubt you did anything wrong.

4: Probably not a good idea,as some components might overheat, although unlikely.Dc4,liquid electrical tape,or nail varnish is a much better choice.

I understand your reluctance to try again, because i have been in the same situation after killing a multitude of Ic7 max 3's.However i hope you will persevere as i did, because with a little knowledge and practise, the likelihood of you having further problems is very minimal.

HI

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated. I actualy might have found the issue - I tested out my other Mach 2 on another PC, I plugged the USB connection into the bottom 4 pins of the USB connection. About 1 minute later the PC stopped - exactly what happened with the previous PC. This one survived though :) I thought the pins were mirrored, but looking at pins 3-4 and 5-6 this isn't quite true. Bit annoyed if it is this though, the 5v and ground pins were ok.

Anyway, I guess I will give it another go as soon as I can be sure I have enough £££ for another mb if it goes wrong again! :)

Cheers
