A3850 vs. 2100 for Programming

Hey guys, just wanted to know whether there will be a significant difference between an Intel i3 2100 + 6670

and an A3850 + 6670 in terms of programming capabilities.

I use DirectX, lightweight graphics libraries in flash and C# along with ready to use game engines like Unity.

Mostly basic stuff, nothing too heavy.

Also, would the above combos play starcraft 2 @ lowest settings on 1080p with playable FPS?

Last, I saw a 2GB version of the 6670 by powercolor. Is it any better than the 1GB version? It has the same clocks as the others.

Get the fastest proc you can afford. It'll drop your compile times. I used to use a crappy AMD Sempron 3400+(1.8GHz). C++ took a long time to compile the small-ish programs I was writing. C# was pretty bad too. I used to use XNA. Even that took quite a while. (Oh, dug, I'm a C++ hobbyist, according to your definition, I realized what you were getting at, my definition is simply a different representation)

oh! Another C++ Hobbyist!

So which one would you suggest?

I haven't used either personally. I'm suggesting the i3 2100. The upgrade path is excellent (i5 2500K / i7 2600K). // <- not dividing

I found a benchmark for Visual Studio C++ 2008. The i3 compiled "Chromium" in about 43 minutes, the i5 took 27.1, and the came in 2nd at 18.6, only losing to the 1366 i7 980X. That's pretty awesome if you ask me (all were at stock too, overclocking would bring SB's architecture into question, and bring it into the lead). I couldn't find a benchmark for the A3850.

thanks a lot for that find man. Really appreciate it. Though with my teensy budget, I'll be buying an H61 mobo and an i5 on that seems pointless

Nah, H61 would be fine with an i5, there is just no point in getting a k or unlocked processor because your motherboard won't let you overclock, but I doubt the motherboard will affect the performance of the CPU anyway.

oh yeah anyone got an answer to the 6670 question? I'm 2 days away from buying this PC and want to sort that part out

Offended much? I'm using the AMD Sempron 3400+ right now LOL. The compile times aren't too bad imo

.

I would go for what dugdiamond suggested.

I would go for what dugdiamond suggested as well had those parts been available

will take a look at the 550 ti though.

I had to include the Windows headers and the Direct X headers. Both headers are pretty huge. I think I was using IE7 at the time too. My programs weren't huge, but compiling/linking took a while. If I was you, stay away from IE8. It killed my browsing experience (5 minutes to load, not too horrible once you get it open though). I think my compile times sucked b/c I was using a MS Visual Studio (large IDE). The 550Ti is a good idea. SC2 seems to be optimized for Intel HW. The 2100 or the 2400 are good options.

I have to say I disagree on the 550 ti. The price difference is about 15 SGD between the 6850 for a lot of performance gain so I don't think I'll be going for the TI. The EVGA version is looking good though. Might just depend on my mood at the shop.
