A new Laptop for the gf

Wouldn't an E-350 + 2GB DDR3 1066Mhz + 1TB 5400rpm drive be enough for video playback?

Yup it's definitely enough, but you have to watch out for HD playback. If you're going to be watching 1080P, it will be hard on the overall system.

Would be cool to try out one of the Llano APU based notebooks. They look pretty cool and prices aren't too bad either.

A tablet could do just as good a job but the 64GB max storage just isn't enough. That's the only reason not to but a tablet for anything other than pro editing and gaming

the e-350 will play back 1080p just fine, but the problem is finding a laptop with that and a 1080p screen.

as for bloatware, you have to clean up any laptop, like my asus u36sd that i just got had a LOT of software, some useful, some not, but i got rid of it all except one driver for all the function buttons.... still a pain, wish they sell you the laptop with a copy of windows, but not install it and let you do it......

Yup, but 1080P uses up a bit of RAM, it's better to have at least 3GB or more. CPU usage usually floats around 40 - 60% depending on the HD 1080P files. My friend was complaining movies were a bit lagging. Other than that, the Fusion design is great to have for a low cost small home theatre or for laptops comparable to Intel Atoms.

Thanks for in the input guys, it's been useful and interesting. I wanted her to spend a little bit more to get something that was more powerful than she needed so that it wouldn't struggle with hd out of the box and to give it some kind of future proofing for her situation.

She ended up choosing the Vaio and bought it last night which I think is a good shout. We can be certain that it's not going to let her down and it's got a decent enough i5 (with turbo) and 1gb gpu to power through hd on what will be a great 1080p screen. Haha, she was bouncing around last night and can't wait for it to arrive, everyone loves unwrapping new tech

Hey, that's great. Now to wait for the delivery and some unboxing. You're very welcome.

Only she can decide really on what she is going to use it for, how much performance she needs, is she going to be gaming? Personally I hate carrying mine around and its 13inch so smaller the better unless you get a wheeled laptop bag.

Good luck with it all the above options you mentioned look like a good choice :-) If she wants to do some gaming the ASUS ROG http://rog.asus.com/products/nb/ a few people I know have got those and say good things about the graphics and performance :-)

I have a C series sony for school work, and i have to say for the price it has been a decent option. I abuse it (unlike the desktop i baby) and I never worry about whether it will turn on or not. I will say that the screen has pretty lousy viewing angles, and that the CD drive is extremely loud, but i am not sure if the blue-ray would be better.

My GF has the DV6 (very similar to the dv7), and frankly its much better built. It also has much prettier screen, although she opted for the 1080p. Her Blue ray drive is also very quite. If she is only going to be watching movies and such then the APU is a great choice imho. The really great thing with hp is that you can get a 3 year accidental damage warranty for like 170 bucks in the U.S. (not sure about the UK) Which for my GF was a must in my opinion, the way she treats electronics should be illegal.

As for Asus and Leveno, i have never owned one. But hopefully the above helps.

I have a lenovo e420 with a hacked bios and upgraded dual band wifi card. It has a nice keyboard and its underside is cool enough to use on your lap (one reason I'd never buy an apple notebook or one with poor ventilation).

I'd recommend a Lenovo Thinkpad as well. I have the E320 13.3" one and it's lovely!

@GuyIncognito - Where do we get modded bioses? And what are the benefits? Always interesting.
