9800 GX2 Unstable

Hello

Im new to the site :wavey:

i had a 8800GTX 768mb Card and recently got it replaced with a 9800GX2

but noticed that i get a lot of FPS Spikes in game play? with my 8800gtx it was very stable and frames where constant but the 9800 gtx seems to be a little slower at processing everything

i tried overclocking my 9800 from

Gpu Clock/Shader/Memory

600/1500/1000

to

713/1782/1127

this made a slight difference in the Crysis Benchmark tool yet in game still wasn't running smoothly Any advice or just a general tip would be greatly appreciated

Thanks Guys :yumyum:

Cpu/ram/motherboard?

sorry i thought you could see it from when i registered :)

CPU - Q9450

Mobo - EVGA 780i board

Ram - 2 x 2gb 800mhz ram

PSU - Coolermaster 1250w

any ideas?

Thank you

By the way my ram usuage is crazy its on 65% on boot up i hate vista :'(

Have you enabled the Multi-GPU Mode within the NVidia Control Panel? If not you will not be running in SLi mode. I would also try uninstalling the NVidia drivers and then installing again, maybe trying some different versions. I am using the current Beta release with my 9800GX2 and Vista Ult64, and have had no problems with the card.

Cheers,

Stu

thanks for your replies

i will try uninstalling the drivers

do you think i would get a performance gain by using the 64bit of vista?

or is it pointless?

thanks

only if you want to run more than 3 gigs or ram wich if your playing crysis you might want to do. and heres why (for the nay sayers). crysis being so great eats ram as a snack even with an oc'ed gfx card (8800 gts 320) i was getting lag b/c crysis needed more than the 2gb vista saw after upgrading to the 64bit verson of my os i dont have problems with lag, it hick ups, but even then the game is still playable (pretty smooth). a 64 bit is good b/c soon more games like crysis will be out and if you dont want to have to keep buying a new gfx cards if the problem is the game doesnt have enough ram to use. following me?

Edit:

i play crysis with mixed settings of high and very high with 2x aa with the crad mentioned above

Hold onto it a bit longer and grab one of the new top level cards from ati/nvidia when they are introduced in a few months.

What do you mean :S? i just got this GPU lol what will i do with my old one  any offers :p

1st what card is it (in the market for a 9800 gtx) and second the programs u mention will run better o a 64 bit os b/c you can use more ram. those programs are very ram intensive and yes you can run all you software ont it just make sure u have the rite drivers and software (games mostly) is installed into the correct directory.[say u have a game that wont run on a 64bit os just install it to C:\program files (x86) this tells the computer to run it as a 32 bit program] dont worry its easier than it sounds

Hello

I have a 9800 GX2 im sorry i wrote 9800 gtx in my first post just a typo :)

yea im really tempted to go with the 64bit :) just got to find a way to back up 800gb stuff

C:\program files (x86)

do you mean just make a new directory for all the software that wont work in the 64bit? i could also just right click them click on the compatibility tab and tell it to run under windows xp or vista x86 rite?

no the compatibility only goes up to xp. and when u install the 64 bit os it will automaticly create the directory program file (x86) this will become your default directory and if you want to run a program like crysis just have the installer install the program into the 64 bit (plain program files directory) directory.

as for silentsnake theres a program called drive clone you'll have to pay to use it but it takes a image of your hdd and then re aplies it after you do what ever.

Thank you i like the sound of that going to look in to it now :)

i forgot to mention that wou will need something to store the image on. depending on the type it might have to be pretty big

loool yea i was looking at the program and thinking im still going to need a massive HDD to transfer the image to

but thanks anyways :)

well even if you have to get a smaller external drive it might be worth it just for backup. i use a small 450gb external for my pics and itunes music (as they dont let you redownload your stuff again wich is stupid)
