9600GT Issue

Hey,

My PNY 9600GT keeps crashing and I think I've found the problem, I was running a temp log (on GPU-Z) and when my PC crashes the last recorded temp is 255C and just 1 second before that it's at 55C. Going from 55C to 255C in 1 second is impossible so I assume that there is a fault in the card making it shutdown because it thinks it is overheating. Is there a way to disable it from shutting itself down?

that wouldnt be wise the reason its shutting itself off is to stop the heat damaging the gpu, how long does it take for it to shut itself off? is it right away? or does it only happen when you put the gpu under load? i used to have an old ati 1800xt with an aftermarket zalman cooler and that was fine for normal use but sometimes when i put it under load for about 10 mins then it would crap out and then it would blue screen i didnt fix it for ages and eventually the chip was 'broke' enough and would blue screen all the time after 10 mins under load and even replacing the thermal paste didnt sort it out.

maybe you can try and replace the thermal paste with mx-2 or 3 cause they are non conductive and i hear they are really good (mx-3 is what tinytomlogan used on the £1000 ati mars card in the new years comp rig)

i dont think a gpu has the ability to reach 255c with a cooler attached to the card, so im thinking its either the software or bios which is screwed, if it reached 255 it will be on the brink of blowing up.

try putting your cards fan @ 100% and see what happens ?

Yeah and the fact that it jumps 200C in literally 1 second is also impossible for a gpu. How can I put the fans to 100%? They're currently at 35%.

Thanks. I did that and it dropped the idle temp from 32C to 24C, then I played Borderlands and it crashed as per usual. This time when I read the log it had jumped from 37C to (once again) 255C in the space of 1 second. There must be something wrong with the temperature monitor causing it to shutdown because it thinks it's overheating.

Generally a reading of 255 for anything is a bitwize return of $FF for a sensor. Usually a mis-read by the software or device. Readings related from this, like delta temps, will then be inaccurate.

I've worked out a temporary fix - I slighly underclocked the card by about 25 Mhz which seems to have worked even though there is only about a 1C difference in temperature.

so no more crashes then? im sure that a loss of that little wont make a difference in games

None so far anyway, it doesn't really make sense as to why that makes a difference.
