939 Dual core Opty or X2?

Hey guys,

I just wanted a quick upgrade for my PC... I was considering an opty but the X2 is a bit cheaper. The main reason of upgrading the processor rather then moving over to a Core2 is my budget! the upgrade will benefit me as I've just started doing some 3D rendering.

Budget would be around £160

I was thinking of an Opty 175 or the X2 4400

:)

think it will support 939 optys, not 940 (obviously). X2s can be gotten for really cheap and tend to clock well aswell

Because the 4400 has the 1mb cache I think its almost the same as the Opty. But if you have the 3700+ (my favorite) are you sure you will see a big difference?

I wouldnt switch, I would save for a C2D later..

The name of the site is Overclock3D, so overclock must be an option.

The 175 will OC much better.

Also from what I have heard the Opterons clock about the same these days.

Middle of the year I would be shouting x2! x2! x2!

But I still play alot of games, including new ones, that only use 50%.

I would seriously hope this improves next year, well it has to.

I would go Opty, I've had more X2's than I can remember certainly over 10, and I bought 1 Opty 170 admittedly it was a cherry picked one and I paid a load of dosh for it but it does just over 3GHz on good water fully stable I have never come close with an X2 I have had 3800's 4400's and 4800's the very best 4800 did 2.9GHz at a real push the 4400's and 3800's were about 2.8ish.

I still have it on the shelf as I'm on C2DUO E6600 now, I thought I might put it in another PC sometime but I'll probably end up selling it as it's been on the shelf for 3 months now.

When the Opties first hit the scene they were leaps and bounds ahead of the X2's in the clocking department, then the Opties started getting binned... After that there was an influx of awesome clocking X2's and then they went back to being binned. As of current I would imagine either one would be alright and probably not be much different. If it were my choice i'd probably go with the Opty though.

Hey guys!

In the end I went for an Opty 180 and the performance improvement over the 3700+ was definitely worth it!

pictures open so much faster, programs run faster & a major speed improvement with rendering 3D scenes :D

if anyone's wondering why I never went for a 165/170 and over clocked it is because im not an overclocker :o.

:D

Rastalovich makes a good point, In the end you are the user so you matter most.

I always wanted a 180 but could only afford the 148. Congrats.
