8x4GB kit vs mixing kits

I was planning to do a Sandy Bridge E build and wanted to piece together what I needed (cuz the platform is expensive). I need new RAM now, as my kit has had 1 DIMM fail. My AM3 board can only use 2 DIMMs, but I need at least 4 for SB-E to work best. I read that the memory controller supports dual channel too.

What issues should I expect if I mix RAM kits? I've heard random crashes/BSODs and refusal to boot if the kits are incompatible.

What do you mean mix kits?

As long as you use two of the same dual kits you'll be fine. I wouldn't use kits with different timings or capacity.
 
get a quad kit for best results as they are binned for better compatibility. it will work using 2 dual kits but if you have issues and try to rma because of it might have a little haggling to do with manu. As they will say you should of used a quad kit lol

Good to know. Thanks. I like the look of the Ripjaws Z better anyway. Fits with my planned blue sci-fi build. Is 1.65V safe for SB-E's memory controller? I'd assume so, as they have Intel's XMP certification.

Will two quad channel kits work together, or should I get an 8x4GB kit. Personally, I prefer dual quad channel kits, as they are available for less than the 8x4GB kit.

Yes dual quad kits will be fine, 32GB kits are expensive. but Im sure X79 is optimized for 1.5V DDR3 so I am not sure if it will run at 1.65V. I am sure someone will be able to give a definite answer.
 
the board will support the memory at whatever volts is required. Most memory is undervolted from the old standard of 1.6-1.65 as the manu process was refined to allow better timings at lower volts. so in a nut shell yes it'll handle 1.65v memory fine. But to make 100% sure check the mobo's site for memory compatibility or even the memory's site they should have a memory finder that will assist better
 
I was wondering b/c Intel dropped the voltage rating from 1.65V to 1.5V with SB. I was thinking no cuz Intel said "no more than 1.575V" that it might damage the CPU in the long term.
