8800GT to 460GTX

Hi all,

I'm going to get a 460GTX (prolly either a MSI cyclone or Hawk or a Gigabyte one),

but i'm stalled now coz i'm not sure whether it will fit in the case, due to height between pci-e slots.

The 8800gt i have now is about 32mm(1,26 inch) in height, and underneath it, there is an asus sound card(xonar dx2),

and that leaves a space between gfx and sound card, of about 2-3mm for a bigger card to fit.

And so i am looking probably for the shortest possible edition of gtx460 if anyone has an idea.

Thanks,

What motherboard have you got? As all current GTX460's are dual slot, so cover two expansion slots of the motherboard. That'll be the easiest way to tell if it'll fit. You just have to make sure there's at least one expansion slot between the pci-ex16 that the 460 is going in and the pci/pci-e slot that the soundcard is in, otherwise the graphics card cooler will block it.

I have an ABIT motherboard, the AW9D-MAX. Actually the 8800gt is also a dual slot card, so currently i

have two slots in use for the gfx card. However, the distance between the 8800gt and the xonar sound card is very very small.

If i tilt the gfx or the sound card up or down they could touch

The 460 is about as long as a 5770 which is about as long as a 8800GT.

The problem won't come from size dude. It'll take up an extra slot downward so make sure you have one.

However, the most important thing to check is if your PSU has the PCIE power connectors you need.

IIRC the 8800GT powers from a single molex? IIRC my 9800GT used a single 6 pin PCIE. But I think the 460 uses two. Yes, after searching for images it appears it does. That will be the only thing that could stand in the way of switching out to the 460.

Edit. Sorry for being a pilchard. Sounds like you need to relocate the sound card. If that's not possible then you will have to consider removing it. However, if it is indeed the D2X you may not want to. Get a pic of your current system (inside) and we can be of more help

Alright, i got two pics so you'll have an idea of how tight thins are in there

In the second image you can really see how close the gfx and sound card are.

btw, the gfx card is a Gigabyte 8800gt(GV-NX88T512HP) which has a zalman cooler(VF-830 ALU)

as opposed to the standard cooler, so it already is a little taller than the standard 8800gt,

which might be good in terms of how taller the 460 is, compared to this one.

What do you think?

@ AlienALX - Yea the PSU does have two pcie connectors,although it's a 535w enermax from 2006.

I guess if it does fit and the psu doesnt have enough wattage for the 460 i'll have to get a new psu as well

It'll fit. That cooler you have on there is at least a dual slot dude. Weird cooler fo sho !

I would make sure you get enough ampage on your 12v PCIE rail. However, to be safe than sorry it might be a good idea to get a new PSU. 600w ought to do it, no skimping on cheapy crapola.

The 460s tho cool and quiet do demand a fair whack of power.

Deffo want to put a PSU on the upgrade list

new GPU will be fine aswell, pics make diagnosing so much easier

is that a gigabyte 8800gt? cause i have the turbo force edition one and thats got what looks to be the exact same cooler

Thanks for the help guys,

i'll give it a go and let you know how it goes and put up some new pics prolly to see the difference

stepster - yea it is a gigabyte and i think the one you said, the turboforce, is the one with the VF-700 cooler - they

do however have the exact same part number - GV-NX88T512HP.
