ive just got a 8800gts 640 off ebay for £30. and its froze and stopped my whole system but not powered off all the fans are going and the sounds is looping fast.

in windows it ran for over 3 hours today with no problems. as soon as i loaded up crysis warhead after 1 min of game play the screen went black and the sound looped. i had to literally turn it off at the wall i turned it back on about 10 seconds later and got an error beep saying no video card was detected.

I left it off for about 2 mins and it came on fine. i have the latest drivers installed and even went back to xp to see if it was windows 7. my 7600gt has run with not 1! problem over 4 years so i was wondering if its my psu not being up to the job( psu is in sig)

Or have i just got a dying card?

any tips or info would be brilliant

yeah i think so to gona go for the corsair 850w

still trying to work out what would be best for me as in a new rig amd with 980a sli or an i7 system all im really botherd with is games. just trying to work out what would be the most cost effective to performance really

hmm well lines on the screen or artifacts is a fault with the GPU memory most of the time

if you go ont the AMD route and whant SLI then wait for the msi fuzion board

just left it in windows for 20 mins and installed MSI afterburner and set the fan to 100% then started to load crysis warhead as soon as it got to 100% when it says press any key the screen went blood red the sound was still going then 10 seconds later it looped. i shut it off at the wall turned it on got the one long beep then 3 short ones ( - ... ) left it off for 1 min then it posted fine.

so i think it may be my psu. i don't know if this is true but the pc not posting might be the psu cut out 1 on the 12v rails. from overloading and it takes a min to come back on.

anyone agree ?

hmmm i think its the memory on the GPU IMO

Your computer has memory problems. First check video. If video is working, you'll see an error message. If not, you have a parity error in your first 64K of memory. First check your SIMM's. Reseat them and reboot. If this doesn't do it, the memory chips may be bad. You can try switching the first and second banks memory chips. First banks are the memory banks that your CPU finds its first 64K of base memory in. You'll need to consult your manual to see which bank is first. If all your memory tests

good, you probably need to buy another motherboard

have you tries a diffrent game to cysis?

if it is booting with the RAM in (all sticks) then its not the RAM so its the GPU mem

just ran 3d mark 06 fine :S

but that does not seem to really stress the card that much

sooo maybe the psu ?

or should i try and update my bios

This seems to be an open and shut case. I am assuming it wasn't new, yes?

Then your card has been on the cookie sheet and you've been had. Sorry man, I hope that doesn't sound crappy but it's just a fact of Ebay. 99.9% of older Nvidia cards for sale on there (and specifically the hot 8 series) have been botched and sold off. I nearly got caught out but when mine died I sent him an email that really put the wind up him.

This look familiar yeah?

Do not pass go do not collect £200 ETC.

Your card is buggered. Basically some one has sold you a card that's taking its last breaths. My 280 did that ^^ for about a week before it totally clacked it. If you want confirmation of this then go into safe mode without a driver. If it works? then it's a part of your card that isn't functioning. When it tries to? see the above again.

If you can't get a refund then the cookie tray is the only resort you have left mate.
