805 temp help...

Building a new intel system for a friend, nothing special just an 805 and a P5ND2 SLI. This is my first P4 build in a very long time but something doesn't seem right on temps. In the bios without doing anything else the temp is sitting at 54-56*c. I have removed the stock TIM and used AS5, tried remounting it to make sure it wasn't a bad mount without any success. It is using the stock HSF but isn't planning on OCing it at all. My thoughts are towards an uneven IHS. Any other suggestions?

Double posting on XS and SX ???

Check out my thread in this section. I replied to your thread on XS as well. Lap that sucker , its real easy and will net you some nice temp drops.

Yeah, Already replied over there. I figure there are some guys here that don't surf XS and wanted to get their opinions as well. I am pulling out the paper as we speak to start lapping it :)

Holy cow! We didn't go to a full mirror finish but oh god did it drop in temp. In the bios it is reading 29*c now compared to mid 50s. MUCH BETTER! It was really wierd. Almost shaped like a W. I should have taken pics as we went but oh well. Installing windows now on it and we will see how things go.

I can't believe Intel would release a chip with such a shoddy IHS on it. I mean, what about all of the noobs that build comps and then have a nuclear meltdown because they don't check the temps or anything of the sort after building a 'puter.

Hrmmm... makes me wonder.

The thing is I could hardly get into the bios to check the temps before the comp would shutdown due to it being so hot. I actually burned my finger touching near the bottom of the heatsink right after it shutdown. :(

They have to cut prices somewhere.

i reach 3,9ghz (195x20)@1,56v and temps 62*c on idle.i try reach 4 ghz but when i change vcore to 1.6v,multiplier has droped to 14.

systech : Have u lapped ur IHS ?? from the looks of it , u seem to have sufficient cooling. Im pretty sure that its the non-flat IHS hindering you. Try lapping the IHS and see how that works for you. Water should easily be able to handle around 1.55V on a Pentium D. But then again I dont know the exact setup that you have. My triple rad can easily take the load of a hot opteron and an even hotter x1900xt with plenty more to spare. Its a bit of an overkill but I was just trying to future safe myself.

roger that!! thanx for the input!!:worship:

if you take fine sandpaper to make the surface of a heatsink smoother to increase heatflow its called lapping.

can also be done on cpu's to get a more flat surface and bring out the copper on the heatshield.

EDIT:

btw l3ourne has made a little lapping guide with images, should be in one of the intel cpu sections if im not mistaken.
