7970 forgets OC

eyefinity

Heyho!

When I stable OC my 7970 @ 1100/1500 it sometimes loses the OC during non reproducing situations. Not under Fullload or Benchmarks. Powerlimit is +20%

It's a HIS ICEq x2 Turbo 7970 and i used MSI Afterburner to OC. Driver is 13.6 Beta2 (but it didnt work with 13.5 either)

I checked the "load OC on boot" box.

Need more info?

I thought this was only necessary If I want to change the voltagE. I don't want to fry my graphics card

I find it helps sometimes when afterburner doesn't want to stick settings.
Don't worry, you won't fry your card. Just don't go dragging that voltage slider far far right :P (TBH even if you did max out the voltage you probably wouldn't fry it)

Yea... so why does my screen flicker now when switching from 2d to 3d mode? so the screen flickers for about half a sec when switching between idle clocks (150/300mhz) and 3d clocks :-(

Well. I got a total Systemfreeze when starting a youtubevid and a colorful display with this "OC mode" @ the same clocks as before.

just uninstalled MSI AB and reinstalled the AMD driver... now the 2D/3D flickering is gone again...

so. what the hack is wrong? so no OC for me because MSI AB advanced mode does the 2D/3D bug and without AB my 7970 forgets its OC-Clocks :(???

//EDIT: Not Damage done due Advanced OC mode... did the heaven benchmark and no artefacts :)

Hmmmmmmmm I have heard of the 2d/3d flicker, but I never got it myself :/
Sometimes afterburner has it's bad days, I had about 2 months of my GPU constantly at 3d clocks because it wouldn't clock down :// (The advance overclocking thing fixed that for me though)

Maybe try using EVGA PrecisionX instead of afterburner, apart from that I have no idea :/

Well. EVGA seems only to work with the green Team ;)

Btw, the OC with the CCC seems to be stable and it works ^^ i dont need afterburner if i got stable clocks (1100/1500) with the CCC or? But it would be nice to controll the fanspeed :-/

If you want to overclock with CCC, that's fine :)

I heard you can use ''speedfan'' to set rpm/temp graphs like you can in afterburner, but apparently it's quite difficult and there's a lot of menus to go through... still, if you technically minded it shouldn't be a problem :)

I have got an odyssee behind me.

Thoughtful as i am i made exact backup of my systemdrive before i installed any other software/driver.

i used the HIS iturbo OC tool which comes with my gpu. So it worked somehow, but sometimes when i started an app (i.e. gpu-z , youtube, games) i got a total freeze. so i uninstalled the amd driver and then used the amd driver remove utility. BIG ERROR

The f***** tool removed several other drivers and deleted a bunch of dlls. so my whole system was crappy, my audiodriver (xonar dx) corrupted...

i backuped my systemdrive and "manually" uninstalled the amd drivers. deinstalled the windows 7900series driver until only a standard vga device was listed. then i installed the 13.6 beta2 again and installed the newest gpu-z. AB and HIS iturbo remain uninstalled.

I used the amd overdrive tool to oc which seems to work stable. interesting though is that in windows mode, 2d, youtube the card goes to 1050/1400 as it is HIS stock. when i start a game (3d) it goes to 1100/1500. doesnt matter that much, but it is interesting, that there seem to be different core clocks now when using overdrive ^^

thoughts on that one? :P

Hey Guys,

for weeks my OC was stable @ 1100/1500 now. I reinstalled Windows and then MSI AB worked with my GPU. No Probs @ All.

But all of the sudden my GPU startet to freeze one week ago. Now I'm able to OC @ 1100/1400 but not more. After some minutes of Gaming my GPU Driver restores, the game freezes.

Can a GPU lose it's OC Potential by age/time? GPU Temp was always under 72°C and i did not change the voltage. the vrm voltage cant be read out because of missing sensor (custom pcb)

help :(

Usually not, but your previous overclock could have been too high and degraded your chip. I seriously doubt that though if you left the voltage on stock. 72 is also a very reasonable temperature.

Or was the voltage set automatically?

Considering how little you are OC'ing over the stock clocks, would it not be better to save the hassle and just leave it at stock clocks? I mean it seems you're having a lot of trouble for less than a 5% increase in speeds.

Did not change anything on the Voltage. It said 1,17v during Games (Trigone Remote Server), didnt use a multimeter to messure.

Yea, @ObscureParadox:

I sometime forget that it has already been OCed by HIS from 925 to 1050. So the next 3-5% Performance are only nessasary for eyefinity (6000*1200) (and mabye barely noticeable)... in 1920*1200 the "his stock" brings 90-120fps @ BF3 Ultra and C3 ist also playable maxed out (without AA).

Maybe i should give it a rest and in 2014 i buy a hawaii ;)

I guess if you run furmark then you can check for any artifacts, I would recommend doing that on max res too so it uses up as much ram as possible.
