7870 Dead, What now?

So yesterday, when trying to remove the thermal epoxy from my 7870 I kipped it but breaking one of the VRAM chips. That's all I'm saying on that here but I was hoping I could get some advice on a card to get.

Ideally it needs to be under £200 but I will happily go and buy a used card if it is cheap enough. For example, I found these,

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SAPPHIRE-...raphics_Video_TV_Cards_TW&hash=item4d24eee35c

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/XFX-AMD-R...115?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item3ce8c55493

I realize that these have more than likely been used to mine but for that, there is warranty. I just thought I should get your opinions before buying.

Thanks boys :)

Joe

The 700 series GPU's prices have plummeted since the release of maxwell, you could probably grab a cheap 770 or 780 if your lucky with your budget.

I've had a look and a 780 isn't quite in my price range and a 770 isn't quite what I want performance wise. The 290 and 780 are the performance I would like to aim for, it's asking a lot but I think I might get one of the cards from ebay .

Maxwell has caused AMD to cut prices and nvidia have discontinued the 770 780 and ti so you might get lucky and grab a . Before maxwell was released you could grab a 780 for between 250 and 280 second hand.

Check out dabs used stock they have some bargains on high end gpu's and come with some warranty

Scan are selling a 780 new on their ebay site for £288. Its a PNY pure performance card, which is a bit odd looking but should be a good one to get :).

-edit- with P&p you could just get it from the main site. I'd stay away from used 290s, especially reference ones as they've probably been abused.

I also upgraded originally from a 7870 to a 280x and I have to say, its actually pretty worth it. The 280x/770 eat everything @1080p with ease.

Just had a talk with my mum (who is buying the card initially) and she has said that I can get whatever as long as I pay it all back whci I can do by working for my dad for a decent wage. I'll now say that my absolute cut off is £250 (if I can get a waterblock in there then I'm golden :)).

edit: I've decided that I can get either a new 290 PC TurboDuo from e buyer for £233 or a 780 Windforce from Amazon for £233 also. Which would be the better card if I am going to be watercooling it at a later date anyway? This is really from a pure performance standpoint as I really only play older titles like Saints Row: TT and games of the same likeness and era.

The VRAM isn't an issue as I only play at 1080p anyway so this won't be the deciding factor. I will be overclocking as far as I can but of course, the silicone lottery is there to f*** me over as usual. :)

can you get a pic of the damage to the card? and if you want and i think i could i could have a shot at fixing it for you if you like.

It's a tough one as the 290 can be pushed to 290X performance if you were willing to overclock but the 780 is a solid performer and has physix and will be getting DSR in the future and nvidia drivers tend to be more solid although AMD are a lot better now a days.

You need to look at the pros and cons of each card and decide on what features you prefer

I cracked the VRAM chip as far as I can tell.

It's now looking like the 780 is going to be my choice of card mostly because of DSR and the AA tech that they're releasing. PhysX is a bit like Mantle to me (only much less significant in terms of what it triggered) because it isn't widely implemented and in most of the games I play it isn't implimented.

thought you had ripped it off was hoping to see the traces. "with what i can see now its impossible to tell if i could do it"
I could hot air it and try to hot air a new one on for you. but if any one els has a uv table that would be better by far. although i should have the stencils needed.
but in the end of the day it could end up being wasted postage money. and every ones time.

Thanks for the offer anyways, I honestly think that the card is pretty much a lost cause at this point.

My mate just bought a brand new zotac 780 from Scan... £230.

Sorry mate, I can't do scan anymore after they told me that a faulty 270 was working perfectly fine from their 'internal testing'. The one on ebuyer is £233 and has the windforce cooler which, if I'm not mistaken, is the best air cooler for the 780?

edit: Here's the one I'll be buying http://www.ebuyer.com/609533-gigaby...ual-dvi-hdmi-displayport-pci-e-gv-n780ghz-3gd

to be honest with you that ram chip is not much of a problem to remove and re attatch for some one with the right tools. probably a 10 min job with most of that being lining up the new ram.. (and after all the 360s that had rrod issues ALOT of people have the right tools)

i would imagine if yu stuck it on ebay for sale with a picture of the problem and a honest description of what happened some one would snap it up.

Do you have the tools to do it? Is love it if you'd give it a crack and I'll pay for shipping and labour if you can get it working. It would just be really beneficial for me if I could stick the card into my home server and do abit of folding for the team.

I'll be buying the WF 780 tonight and at some point in the future a block for it and possibly another rad just to keep me in the cooler side temps wise. I might even end up making myself a block just to save myself the £80 that it is for a nice looking block these days.

I've looked back at ebuyer and it seems that the 780 that I wanted has risen in price to £255 however I ave found a 'new' 290X on ebay for £230 and I was wondering if you guys think that I should spring at it. It has a reference design and cooler but I'm going to be getting a block as soon as I can so the noise isn't an issue an heat will be kept down.

The card in this picture says 780ti...

if i did it id have to do it with a solderstation and hot air. the solder i would use would be a flux solder paste. it would be less acceptable than a uv table with solder balls.
honestly.. i would not want to use my time to desolder it and find the traces were damaged below it. i simply have to much to do as of late.

if the whole chip had come off (or atleast as much as was needed for me to see that the traces were ok) i would have been happy to give it a go for you..
but if i desoldered it and the traces were damaged, i honestly could not spend the time needed trying to repair them (and to be honest i dont think i could repair them to a state where the card worked properly)

in your situation i would advise a uv table setup. which sould guarantee that if teh traces arent damaged now they will remain un damaged on removal. with the hot air i wouldnt say the same thing.
