7850 overclocking problem

I seem to have a problem with overclocking my msi 7850. I used msi afterburner to overclock it and at first it seemed to work fine. But after about an hour I noticed that my core clock will randomly drop back to it's default frequency of 900mhz instead of my overclocked frequency of 1030mhz.. The sliders in msi afterburner still show my overclock, but the msi monitoring software and gpu-z shows that my gpu is running at default speeds. I have also noticed that my 2d clock will go up from 300mhz to 450mhz when this happens.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

probably the drivers crash from bad OC and it either restores the drivers and reverts clocks to 2d or stock, or just BSODs

overvolt it abit make sure temps are still fine, then start with core and shader in itervals of 25 then memory in 50s

but I have ran unigine for 1hour on my overclock. No crashes or artefacts. It seems to revert to its default clocks when at idle.

I have tried both of those suggestions but the same thing is still happening usually after I have been playing games. I'm starting to wonder about my psu (Antec truepower new 650). My last graphics card which was a gtx 470 wouldn't overclock without crashing after a while, so I may just have to buy a tester for my power supply. I'm also pretty sure my psu has coil whine as it makes a high pitched hissing noise which becomes louder as the frame rate increases.

It's normal for it to downclock when idle, sort of like speedstep with CPUs, as long as your clocks go back up when you do something intensive I wouldn't worry about it

no I'm talking about my overclock. It keeps resetting to it's defalt 3d clock speed of 900mhz when I have set it to run at 1030mhz. When this happens I have to shut down the pc to be able to overclock the card as it basicly locks and prevents any overclocking at all. I know that the amd drivers may be resetting the clock speed because it's unstable, but the 7850 is a very good overclocker and should have no problem running at 1030/1300. In fact compared too how much most other people with 7850's are overclocking, my settings are very conservative. This is why I'm starting to put the blame on my psu. perhaps the voltages are too high or too low?

Ahh right, I though you just meant it was down clocking when idle

Not sure what it could be, you could try changing the BIOS, apart from that I can't think of anything else.

I have also just noticed that my card sometimes idles at 300mhz with memory at 150mhz, and sometimes it idles at 450mhz with the memory on full at 1200mhz, surely this can't be right? also when the card is idling at 450mhz it runs about 10 degrees hotter than when it is at 300.

Well I also have a MSI 7850 and can tell you that I have a profile set that runs the card lower than the stock frequency. Problem is that no matter what I set the memory clock to it always runs at 1200 :s

I'm starting to think that there is a problem with the current AMD drivers. I have also noticed that many people with the gigabyte windforce version of this card are also having problems of some sort.

I figured out the problem finally. When you are playing a video, on youtube for example the core clock goes up to 450mhz regardless of whether the video is playing or not. when I was testing my overclock I had youtube opened in browser and for some reason this stops the overclocked settings for the card from kicking in. I'll just have to make sure that I have no programs with a lot of flash content running in the background when I am gaming.

Thanks for all of the suggestions!
