£750 Rig Advice...

Hey guys,

Looking at spending as near as I can to £750 on a new rig - I game (SC2/WoW) mainly, but like to dabble in FPS's as well.

So far, the list is looking like this...

Noctua NH-U12P

G.Skill 4Gb DDR3 1600 (2x2Gb) CL9 RipjawX Dual-Chan Kit

Intel i5 2500K

60GB OCZ Vertex2 E Series SATA2 SSD 2.5In Drive

Asus P8P67 B3 LGA1155

OCZ 700Watt ModXStream Pro PSU

NZXT m59

Zotac 1024Mb nVidia GeForce GTX 560Ti OC

I'm happy to look at AMD options, and I know that the choice of case is contentious (but just built a system in one in the last 2 weeks, and was very impressed for the price!).

So come on guys, feel free to flame my choices, but £750 is non-negotiable!!!!

Looks pretty good, but there are 2 (well actually 3) comments, from me anyway

1st, loose the OCZ power supply and go for one of the more reputable brands. Corsair, Seasonic, NZXT to name some.

2nd, loose the U12P and get a NH-D14

And last, no big storage drive? not nessecary? or did you forget it?

About the budget, since you didn't put any prices in I don't know if you have anything left for these changes or not.

also, I'm not familiar with the OCZ SSDs so can't comment on that one.

im assuming you have windows / monitor etc

so why not build the TTL/ARIA budget rig,

throw in a modular power supply and a SSD, maybe even upgrade the chip to a quadcore. and that will be close to £750 i think

I would also go with OEOTS comment, go for a better PSU, I bought an OCZ 750w power suply and it died after 14 months!, Corsair for me all the way now

As for the OCZ SSD, I have one the same as the one you have in your list and can report that I have not had any problems or any degradation of performance in the 5 months I have had it

Good luck with the build

Cheers Guys,

I have ditched the PSU in my head (on the spreadsheet) and I'll look around for something more fitting! Anyone have any comments on XFX ones, or should I splerge and go for Corsair?

Nice to know that the SSD is a ok though

Yep, I have some big disks and a monitor, and a crisp copy of Windows7 HPx64.

You could have a look at the TTL/Aria build but that was a H55 mobo with a I3 CPU. Its a good base if you want to build the best possible gaming rig you can now for £750 and then not bother upgrading it in the future or anything.

If you want a rig you can upgrade in the future though, then I personally would do what you can to keep the P67 mobo and the 2500K as that's pretty much the king of the hill atm for gaming. Loose the SSD if you need to as although they do make big improvements to the overall feel of your system, in most games there not going to do that much for your gaming experience other than quicken load times. You could always possibly add one later.

Like the others said, atm OCZ don't have a great rep when it comes to PSU's so you might want to change that but otherwise, if you can get all that stuff you listed for 750 quid then go for it as it looks a cranking build.

Corsair, Seasonic, Antec and NZXT are the trusted brands I know of.

I would go for a Corsair or an Antec personally, as said before I definately wouldnt skimp on the PSU for 2 reasons:

1. If you get a decent PSU it will last you years and many an upgrade in the future.

2. If you buy a cheap PSU and you get a fault with your rig its bloody hard to diagnose and you can wwaste a great deal of time, money and patience only to find that the PSU isnt outting enough power.

As most people who frequent hardware forums will tell you, a cheap psu brings nothing but tears in the long run!

Good luck and dont forget to post some photeys of your build

I would have to say go the corsair psu if you can. Go the D-14 with the Intel rest sounds good will be a nice rig when done.

Thanks for all the comments guys, much appreciated.

Just for a bit of background, I've been using EZCool PSU's for the last few years. My local bits shop Eclipse, is very very close to where I live in Coventry, and they seem to be able to sell them at very good prices.

However, I'd already decided to swap to a more established brand as I wanted to give the new rig some stable juice for OC'ing.

Based on price, make and all importantly looks (lol) I'm now looking at this - http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product.aspx?code=PSA-620HCG Antec as the fave.

I am likely to get the lot from Eclipse, as if there are any issues, I can walk parts into RMA if need be, and I have a good relationship with them. BUT, again I am open to looking at Aria, Scan et al; let me know your thoughts.

Excluding the CPU cooler I'm sitting at £710 for the build. Leaving me around £40 for a cooler. Now the question is, can I get a good cooler for @20-25 and leaving me a little more to go for a corsair? Or am I better off sticking with my £40 for a cooler?

I'm planning on doing a whole build blog about this from the minute I order the parts to the final build.

Cheers,

Fletch
