650D silencing mod

Hi!

I noticed that a lot of you guys have the 650D here on OC3D, and I thought I couldn't be the only one with the problem where the front fan has a bass-ish, annoying sound to it, so I figured I'd post some pictures on how I fixed that.:p

First off all this problem is caused by the grill in front off the fan sitting to close to the fan, and blocking it from pulling air into the case.

Before you start doing anything to your case, you could try to use a extra set of spacers on the fan to give it some room. It almost worked out but I still had that annoying bass-ish sound to it, but I've red that it helped out for some people.

This is what I'm talking about:

So I went to war with my Dremel.

All you have to do is to cut around the edges like this (not exactly rocket-science):

Here's just a cool pic of some sparks midways through the job:

When you're done it should look something like this:

My plan was to make it smooth, but my cutting tool broke so I'll just have to fix that later.

A pic with with the front panel on:

As you can see it doesn't look that bad although I couldn't make it smooth, but you can't see it with the dust filter on.

I hope this might help someone with a computer sounding like a helicopter.

My computer now sounds like a computer, and thanks for reading!:p (Also a thanks to my friend who helped out on this project.)

(If posted in the wrong section, could an admin please move it to the right one?)

you have to make it smooth...
you might not see it, but you know it's there :)

Exactly! I'm just waiting for a new saw-bit, the last one broke during the modding, so we ended up having to use pliers to remove the last of it.

good stuff. i've seen this method done before, but the only problem with it is that there are no 200mm fans that i like. i did something a little different

also worth noting is that when i removed the front 200mm stock fan from my case after a couple months of running it, there was grease around the motor area where those little holes are.

the other thing i did to make the 650d a little nicer to live with is fix the stuff power button

Yeah you have to smoothen those edges. That way air flow will be clean and things will be even quieter at high RPM's. A grinding stone should do the trick if you have a machine small enough to get it in there.

Good Luck!

it's fairly easy to get those round edges clean looking with a dremel it just takes a bit of time

I know this is considered noobie by many, but I just use a fan controller :p

oh yeah well the integrated fan controller in the 650d works for these, i think you need to fun them fairly slowly. i found they were only just acceptable noise wise on low but med and high they are too loud for me personally even with no mesh there.

I had an NZXT fan controller, but the fans were just as loud on 40% (minimum) as they were on 100%, so now I'm running the fans on the mobo, controlled by fanX in AI Suite, and there is almost no sound.

well thats certainly one way of doing it lol;

are you going to add some grill in there or have the filter on the fan itself?

some fans aren't that friendly with controllers or even restricted and can create even louder noise then being at 100%.

premium quality ones like noctua's or specters dont have such issues of course

i found the stock fans were okay at 5v using the built in fan controller. but at 7v or 12v they are really loud. i used the stock fans for a few weeks but then switched them all over to noctua's
