5700 or 2070?

I have a 5700, I bought it because it represented good value:
- flash 5700xt bios
- soft power tables tables
- overclock and get amazing performance
The more I've read/watched it seems that watercooling is pretty essential. This means another £100 on the block plus the rest. Also, drivers seem to be problematic.

I've yet to use the 5700 as I had some issues with the mobo bios and I can't be bothered with a custom loop so now the 5700 isn't as attractive as it once was.

I've seen 2070 for £50 to £100 more than I paid for the 5700, I could leave it on air and aio the cpu. The 2070 outperforms the 5700.


I've been out of the loop for quite a while so if I'm wrong let me know. I don't plan on changing my gpu for 2/3 years if possible.

Why is watercooling essential? Do you have the leaf blower design? If so I could see that being the case. Though if you have one of the good Air cooler models it should be totally adequate?

As a side note, are you complaining about drivers for the GPU? If so, you flashed it to a different BIOS, it's bound to run into issues as the drivers weren't made with that intention. You could try using DDU in safe mode to remove the drivers, then reinstall the latest ones as a fresh install and see if that helps. Also look into any Windows update incompatibilities. The newest Windows version 1909 has some problems.

The 2070 Super should cost roughly the same as the 2070. It will give performance within 5% of a 2080. If you want to upgrade, then that would be my suggestion.

It is the blower style and when pushing the navi you need watercooling, if you dig around enough you'll see that's the case unless staying at stock power settings.


Maybe I wasn't clear but my post does say I haven't used the 5700 yet - I was just stating my reasoning for the purchase. Driver instability is a known issue

5700 is £300
2070 is £350 - 21% higher effective speed than 5700
2070 super is £450 - 27% higher effective speed than 5700 and just 6% over 2070

£50 more for a 2070 over a 5700 to get 21% makes sense
£150 more for a 2070S over a 5700 to get 27% doesn't seem worth it as 6% is costing £100 there

All the stats I'm using are from userbenchmark.

What res are you at? Don't bother with userbenchmark, they're no longer trusted(Fiddling with benchmark weightings in weird ways), just use real world gaming results instead. At 1440p there should only be 5% between the 5700 and 2070, even then on average it should only be upto ~10% between the two at 1080p or 4K depending on the range of games tested, you'll never find a consistent 20% gap in a real world game afaik.

Also the 5700XT is usually only 2-6% slower than the 2070Super but can be found for the same price as a 2070(£350) depending on model.
