512MB 7800GTX STOPS in Feb06

Recent conversations with insiders at NVIDIA have led us to believe that their top of the line card, the 7800GTX 512MB will be out of production sometime in Q1 next year, most likely somewhere around February ‘06.

This fits in quite well as we suspect ATI to launch the R580 GPU around the same timeframe. Therefore, NVIDIA will need to come up with something really special to beat ATI’s upcoming offering (at least on paper). Of course, if the 7800GTX 512MB is anything to go by, the G71 or G72 GPUs will still be considerably faster.

Interesting stuff, the GPU market is a bit all over the place these last couple of months, kinda makes me think it will be worth holding off on sli or crossfire until the dust has settled somewhat.

has the dust ever really settled in the gfx market though? They just keep rollin' em out!

Yeah, they do have a thing for doing that, don't they!

It makes it more difficult for the user to decide when to invest in an upgrade 8)

Reminds me of the 6800 512mb i am so glad i never brought one now.

I guess for anyone with 256MB units the upgrade was not really needed (although the single card is mighty impressive) - still a good upgrade for those wanting to step up a gear or two in GPU power.

Arent ATI meant to have started making the R580 already, so it makes sense that Nvidia would pull production of their top of the range, silly price card once they have a new one to release, no one is going to pay those high prices for something which will probably be equalled or bettered by a lower cost card.

Thats true mate - either delete the 'stop-gap' or make it cheap enough for mere mortals to be able to afford ;)

Yes mate they are in production.they are due out late Jan early Feb

I think end of Feb is the best we can hope for these - we may see a paper release before then - maybe even a few sample reviews or previews - normally 4-6weeks after the preview...... good old ATI 8)
