4GB or 6GB?

Hi.

Im just wondering, running on 3 ram slots, do that make them a lot slower when gaming? Or do the extra ram compensate for that? newer games can use more than 2GB or ram, and running whit only 4 on my system, i only got 2.8free.

So im wondering, perhaps it is just as good to run 6GB?

If you're running a system that supports dual channel memory, then its best to have dimms installed in multiples of 2. Socket 1366 supports triple channel memory and therefore its best to use dimms in multiples of 3. Some of the new X79/2011 socket boards run in quad channel.

If you put 3 dimms in a dual channel board, they will all run at single speed.

Yes i know, perhaps what i should have asked, is singel channel mutch slower than dual? is it more to gain whit 2GB alittle slower? But running singel is perhaps not efficient in gaming?

Im on a strict budget, so it isnt just to buy more ram, hehe!. Chears

If you are on a strict budget then 4gb is fine. I'm assuming you're running a 64 bit OS, as a 32 bit OS can only address 3gb of ram anyway.

for ur board you want either 2dimms or 4dimms, i would say either add one more set of the same ram you havea or just upgrade with 2x4gb sticks

mrDMxtreme: i dont think you read what i wrote, hehe.

Sheroo: hey hey hey, im noob, but not totaly ignorant!

Ofcourse i have 64bit.

So what you are saying are that i loose to mutch more speed in singel channel vs dual? so 4GB will performe better than 6GB,even if the games can use more than 2GB?

i usaly has about 2.5GB free as it is, so i just figured that 4.5GB,even though it is slower would perform better. but that is wrong?

So i go whit the 4gb then.?

The only real way to tell for your system and the software you use it to configure your current 4gb in single channel by moving the dimms around and see if you notice any appreciable difference. I run 4gb in my rig and am very happy with it.

I've read that the going from single to dual gave a 2-3% fps increase in games

realy? not more? then parhaps it actually will increase the overall performace of for.eks. skyrim? letting the game beeing able to use 4.5 insteed of 2.5 will perhaps weigh up for the 2-3 increase.. i think i have to experiment little whit this then

if i understand it correctly, quantity, will reduce the ammount of times it has to load, because it can hold more, but dual channel will mean it can load more quickly

technically unless the game needs all the extra ram, its as long as it is broad...

so it depends what you wish to do

you could always get 2x4GB sticks, and just have done with it...

Also not all games use more than 2GB unless the large address aware flag is on, but I think most games have patched this although Skyrim is still one of them.

i have 16 gb in my rif what is a bit of a overkill but when you try to do a lotof thing at owens you will see the diffrens in having more memory in your rig
