hey i am running 32 bit XP , i upgraded to 4 GB due work related issue's.

When i open my task manager it says i am running 3079430 KB fysical memory.

I don't get it.

Whats happening with the other 1 gig?

I can't see , maybe I can't run it?

short answer: 32bit only supports up to 3gb

Windows XP 32-bit is limited to a total of 4 GB, which is, by default, equally divided between Kernel and application usage. Using the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file forces Windows to limit the kernel to the upper 1GB and provides up to 3GB for applications

I think the limit is 3.12 GB or something

32bit can only address up to 4gb of ram, some ram is 'used' addressing hardware

4gb ram - 512mb for your gfx card leaves 3.5gb ram and so on...

64bit allows full 4gb. Hope that makes sense

Edit: eq seems to have the correct answer!

So if I speculate :

I might think thjat buying 4 Gigs on a 32 bit operated machine is actually waste of money.

Correct... 32bit systems wern't very well future proofed. ;)

Not necessarily. You can get 4gb for the price of 2gb.

Instead of having 2gb usable you have just over 3gb. An extra gb never hurt anyone... Especially in vista

Ram's been very cheap lately and it's reckoned to work better in matched pairs, so buying an extra 2 gb to get just an extra 1gb or so, isn't as mad as it seems.

As has been said 32bit Windows only allows 3GB of ram to be detected :). Running a 64bit OS will be the best bet :),if you are worrying about software compatabitlity, I had to repair a 64bit OS the other day (not having any experience with 64bit OS) I quickly fixed graphics problems etc... and there was plenty of software which was 64bit but not the whole I can run anything feeling. It was hard finding some specific drivers for a 8600... I did manage to get some and it error'd :(. Finally got some from an external source, as the first location was Nvidia, which they deleted the files from their server for all 64bit lol.

But don't let that experience put you off :). Runs great and no crashes or anything under stress :D. (unlike my Windows xp and Vista):worship:

well my friend !

windows xp (32bit) reads only up to 3.2gb rams !! if u install the windows xp (64bit) not all the application work on that ! and plus u might face some problems with that also :)

and 1 thing i would like to add is that the windows xp (32bit) reads up to 3.2gb rams but the bios reads the whole thing :D

so ur other option is windows vista ! windows vista reads ur rams up to 6gb rams (correct me if im wrong about the 6gb) :D

chears

I am pretty sure that Vista-- the 32 bit version anyway- still only reads 3-ish GB of memory. The 64 bit versions of both XP and Vista can be set to read more than that though.

I think what equk is trying to say is that this thread is a little old now.. and could you please check the date before posting? ;)
