Do you use the standard windows or 3rd party defrag? How do you find it?

i use perfectdisk 2008 and it seems to do a thorough job

i just use the windows one, i really cannot be bothered with that, its enough effort to do spyware and viruses etc

Defrag is defrag i reckon...

sounds about right, if i find anything wrong with the windows job (which, let's face it, is slim) then i'll switch but until then i'm quite happy using it.

Do we even know if the Vista one does anything? I know the XP one does but not that good as far as i can tell. Me? I dont defrag because i never have an install on my hd for more than 3 months sadly.

Only with newly created files really.

I mean in this day and age, drives aren`t basically slow even with minor fragmenting.

You can go alot deeper with the likes of PerfectDisk?? (I think it`s called), where it`ll put highly used files at the quickest reading area of the drive and things like that...

Dunno if it`s exactly worth it today tho.

I will say this tho - when I get my act together and have all my legit tools arranged on a data drive for every install I do for myself, this sort of defragger might make it`s way on there. No an essential tool for me tho.

After a new install of windows (after drivers, apps, games etc) I normally disable virtual memory (so the unmoveable page file isn't there) and then do a defrag just to sort the filesystem out a bit. Then re-enable virtual memory.

Then the pagefile and everything else is put in a nice order.

I tried Auslogic after reading tox's post and it seems pretty good :) and it is free. But I normally use the windows one.

Altho tbh I hardly ever defrag my drive as it mostly isn't needed and doesn't seem to have much effect on the performance of the system. It's a bit different to years ago when we were on ide drives.

Really don't like the windows filesystem tho :(

but it still fragments over everyday use? thats the beauty of windows based file systems
True but since i install so little on my drive and dont use a pagefile theres really no point. When i get around to it ill be formatting for some other reason.

Currently I'm using O&O Defrag, it's nice as it allows you to defrag multiple drives at the same time, I think diskeeper may have done a better job in speeding up my drives though.

UltraDefrag for me, has a nice range of options such as boot defrag, file compaction, and doesn't seem to take too long or use much of the system resources when it's running. I did use defraggler but my windows didnt like it much, i guess it tried moving a system file or something and windows just hung instantly.
