£3k gaming/quiet/media build advice

Hi there,

Been a couple years since I was posting regularly on these forums, hope you are all doing OK.

I first joined this forum when building my first PC:

So it's been about 30 months/2.5 years that I've had that PC now, everything is running great. However it's moving downstairs to the study so my Dad can run his Unix software off of it.

I'll be building a PC again, and to be honest my criteria are much the same as last time out, with a couple differences.

My four top priorities are (in no particular order):

1. Serious gaming performance. I'll probably go for the 780Ti as it's the fastest single core GPU out there (iirc). I used the same strategy when buying the nVidia GTX 580 and it still runs everything on at least high settings which is quite remarkable.

2. Good multimedia capabilities. This is mostly around a sound card, though I don't know what effect this has on the GPU cooling. I'm keeping my Corsair SP2500 speakers.

3. Quiet operation (except when gaming). Mainly prioritising good fans but I reckon the case makes a difference too?

4. Small-ish size factor. My motherboard would most likely be ATX form factor.

I've prepared an Excel doc which shows where I am at with deciding components, I'd really appreciate it if you guys could advise me on how to fill the blanks:

One key thing I was wondering about was the CPU and consequently the motherboard, if you have advice on those two it's much appreciated.

I might dabble around with overclocking, underclocking and playing about a little.

Oh and I don't have to exhaust that budget! (and probably have no need to)

do you want to re-use parts from your old system?
the nh-d14 and the ssd don't really need to get replaced imo
PSU isn't bad either

It's pretty much a situation where everything inside the case is going downstairs.

Otherwise all I would have to do is plug a new GPU in :) I'll also be moving out in a few months so will need my own setup.

Also that PSU is fine but you wouldn't believe that's the fifth one Corsair have given me, I had some really rotten luck last year.

With £3k budget, you could go fully pledge watercooling, now that's QUIET.
For the soundcard, Xonar STX all the way, unless you need a 5.1 one.
The case, which is reasonably small imo, i'd look at 750D or a Switch 810. There are other cases out there but both of the ones i said has ample, AMPLE room for WC

well then i'd maybe do something like this
some things are can be swapped according to personal preference ofc
the 3k aren't really needed imo
//could also get 2133 RAM instead

With regards to CPU, it seems that Haswell on a Z87 chipset would be the best way to go?

Here's my understanding of Intel's progression over the course of the last two years:
Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge/Haswell: More "mainstream" market
Sandy Bridge E/Ivy Bridge E: Enthusiast market
c0c9fceac72adfa9188505aa5210b850.png

And then I assume:

1. Unlocked Broadwell shall succeed Haswell during Q3/4 2013 on the same LGA 1150 socket, 9 series chipset for "mainstream"

2. Haswell E shall succeed Ivy Bridge E during Q3/4 2013 on a new LGA 2011-3 socket and X99 chipset

Which I suppose gives me comfort as it makes now a great time to build a new system if I'm right.

Is my understanding correct here?

Total 1917.35 plus delivery for the above.
Remove the sound card and go sli would be 2329.03

Monitors and peripherals are up to you really. I went with the 350D as it is small and discreet but still nice to look at. I also went with the I5 rather than the I7 option as it will be mainly used for gaming and there really is no need to spend the extra money on an I7. You can if you want to but there is really no need in this situation.

The soundcard is there because you wanted one but I would ditch it and add a second 780ti. The only reason I didn't do it initially apart from your request is there is very little room in between the cards to keep them cool. This can be changed by going to ATX form factor just change the motherboard and case to something like this.

Case ATX: Corsair 600t
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/cors...id-tower-gaming-case-with-side-window-w-o-psu
Motherboard: Msi gaming G45
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/msi-...-sata-raid-pcie-30-(x16)-d-sub-dvi-d-hdmi-atx

ATX total: 1968.28
ATX total with sli: 2520.01

The advantages to the ATX option would be the ability to run sli with the 780's and keep them cool and still have a sound card. The thing is it will be a slightly larger case. Other than those changes everything more or less stays the same.

Even if you go ATX 780's option you will still be a good bit under budget. Perhaps enough to spend on a really good 1440p monitor if you need one.

Have cheated a little and started updating things myself. Knocked off sound card and wifi due to the motherboard, will get a portable DAC instead which is for the HTC One which loves to hiss :P

I think when it's finished then it will be all black with a bit of a red/orange glow from case fan lighting and the keyboard.

Would go with a full watercooled m-atx system. Portable and can still pack a lot of power.

Would probably go with a 4670k, 290x in crossfire, a 350D or Fractal Design Arc Minii R2(if its out) and both cases could do a rather high end loop with at least dual thick 240 rads.

Does RAM still not matter at all? Back in the day of Sandy Bridge I believe you were just putting in 8GB of Mushkin Black/Red at 1600/1866 and moving on...

It does indeed. Minimum for any modern rig should be 8GB. Though with games starting to use more vram along with system ram 16GB has started to become the norm. 16Gb is very unneeded but if you have the extra money its worth it in the long run especially if any multiple editing/programming/render software is ever used.

What speed/MHz would you consider a sweet spot for a 16GB kit? And I assume across 2x8GB rather than 4x4GB.

Yes 2x8GB kit. This allows you to go to 32GB in the future. Make sure your OS supports over 16GB though as Microsoft has a 16GB limitation on W7 home premium(idk about w8).

For any modern ram kit, 1600mhz is great. 1866mhz cost little more but is worth it, however many kits over 1866mhz cost a lot more and the extra performance from them is only noticeable in the rendering/programming/editing software not as much in gaming(yet).

Finally got round to ordering after I sorted all the spec out!

A real shame I can't find the CW611 or CM615 in stock at any UK retailer right now though? :/

Touch wood this system should last longer than the last.

Will post another build log and rig gallery once complete
