3570k or 3770k?

Ok so I'm a numbers guy and I can only see the following diffrences between these two:

i7 has hyper threading.

i7 is 100Mhz faster.

So I'll be using this computer for everyday purposes: gaming, slight video editing, electronics CAD (altium), web surfing.

So my question is: given that the i7 is 60% more expensive (and I do have a budget

) Is it worth the extra cost?

(fun fact: my current desktop has a AMD Athlon 5050e)

Considering only half of your planned activities contain things which would benefit from an I7, and the 100Mhz difference doesnt matter, you can OC your 3570k anyway.

I reccomend you get the 3570l especially since you are on a budget

A 3770 has hyperthreading, it essentially makes that quad core and 8 core CPU with 4 physical cores and 2 threads per core as apposed to the 3570k which is a quad core and no hyperthreading. Hyperthreading is only needed if the program you are using is optimized for it.

Ok thanks for the info. Overclocking isn't off the table so I'll look at the 3570K.

I suppose there is a sweet spot and every Mhz over cost slightly more than the last.

To be honest I currently do my 'slight video editing' on my 1.7Ghz i5 macbook air, So vegas on a 3570K will be an improvment.

Yes an i7 will be better for editing so get it if you can but firstly build your pc within your budget based upon a 3570k. If you have enough cash left over then pay for the i7.

My budget is pretty slack. I'm a uni studnet with almost no expenses. But my job doesn't make very much.

I've ordered a bitfenix prodigy.

I already have a GTX 260, a coolermaster 650W PSU, and 4GB RAM, 120gb SSD and a 1TB HDD.

Going to buy an ASUS P8Z77-I, i5.

Eventually I'll replace the RAM (16GB), GPU (HD7970). and a more efficent PSU.

Hmm yea you could definitely do with a CPU/Mobo and GPU upgrade! If you upgrade one the other will hold the system back.

At least you can keep your storage and PSU. When you upgrade your GPU I'd suggest a 7950 or 670. Those are the best value performance cards.
