2x512 + 1x2GB = Kaput ?

Hi,

I currently have a 32bit Vista PC (HP a6105.fr) with 2x512mb DDR2 which has 2 free slots.

It's as slow as hell, so I'd like to speed it up.

I've happened upon 1x2GB of DDR2.

The way I see it, my options are:

Keep the 2x512 and add the 1x2GB

Get rid of the 2x512 and use 1x2GB instead

Keep the 2x512, ditch the 1x2GB and buy 2x???

I don't know much about RAM... so I'd really appreciate it if you guys could give me some advice about the pros and cons of these options, which is the best, and any other preferable options there might be.

Thanks,

Reimo

Theoretically it should work fine as long as the pairings are there. U need to be sure the speed rating for all the strips are good too. If u have 3 fast ones and 1 slow one, ALL the memory will run at the slowest speed rating.

Check ur manual too, there will be a memory config table at the front somewhere, it should tell u about limitations. Some mobos operate at a slower speed when all 4 slots are occupied - these are generally older mobos tho.
