2nd 770 or a 780?

I had a thread in the monitors section asking for advice on a new monitor. 1440p was suggested as a viable upgrade over a bigger 1080p monitor so I thought i'd consider that.

I was planning to get a 2nd gtx 770 with a new monitor but will 2GB of VRAM be enough at this res even with having 2 cards or would I be better off selling the 770 and getting a 780 non ti, not too sure I want to pay the extra £100 for the ti version after paying more than I planned on a monitor.

Or any other suggestions would be welcome.

Wait, ignore that. I forgot that the 'card will only use the same amount of ram as the lowest sized ram 'card. 2gb Should actually be ok though.

Ah right. Well I was thinking, selling the 770 and buying a 780 would be cheaper than a 2nd 770 assuming I got £200 for the card. Getting a 2nd 770 would be next in terms of price and selling the 770 and getting a 780 ti would be the dearest.

What would yield the best performance now and in the long run at this res taking next gen games into consideration like watch dogs for example which I'm assuming is going to be demanding a lot of memory?

My advice would be to run a single card, see what kind of performance you get and make a decision based on that, although to be honest, it should be a 780 really, no microstutter, no extra power and heat and it just works fine on 1440p.

So a normal 780 should do fine and I wouldn't benefit hugely from paying the extra £100 and getting a 780ti instead? I do like to max things out though, just wanting to know if the extra £100 is actually worth the extra performance gain.

But yeah, maybe I should just get the monitor on its own. Just see how the 770 goes and then make a decision. Only reason I'd be impatient and rash would be if there's a sale, I plan on waiting till after Christmas when I might be able to grab stuff a bit cheaper so there's a small window.

Well if you can afford to get the TI, then you should. it is an epic card and should last you a good while.

Yeah I can afford it, it's just a matter of "Do I want to spend this much" when something else could suffice but if I pay more now, I save more in the long run.

So you really think it will be worth the extra £100? I'll always be hesitant till I get the thing and then i'll be 100% content with whatever my decision was.

On average it is about 4 to 6 fps faster on 1440p versus a 780, the ti is showing bigger numbers in 1080p but thats not really relevant i would say. However it may be a fair bit faster since this review was written because of driver updates. I guess getting the best performance you can buy is the best option as the ti will last you quite a while, which does make sense.

I use a reference 780. No complaints apart from it's overclocking ability but that's just the luck of the lottery. I love gaming on my 2560x1440 monitor so much I'm buying two more after I get another 780 (or 2). 780TI is a great card also, if you have time to wait then that's the best option. Always wait if you can. Squeeze everything you can out of your parts for now and then upgrade when the playing field is more even. Who knows what will happen in the next month or two, maybe more price drops for 780.

Yeah I learned that the hard way. I went ahead and bought a new case and graphics card a few month ago, the card being the 770 and I never had any intention of getting a 1440p monitor. Now I want to and for a better experience I need a new card so I sell the 770 and I'm out at least £120 for no reason, impatience is costly.

I was thinking of doing that, keep the 770 a little longer and game on that with a 1440p monitor and wait and see what happens with the 780 and 780ti. Only downside to that is the longer I wait, the lower the value of my 770. If I had waited the first time though then I could have went straight ahead and gotten a 780 or 780ti with no wasted money.
