2K Games has announced Civilization VI's new Australian Civ

Well they will either be fun or useless. Right now building next to a coast in most cases is a terrible move. Navies are useless in this game, they'd need to fix that for them to have some use. This just makes coastal cities really hard to build, especially if it's early or mid game where your resources are limited

Surprised they don't get a bonus for every ship full of convicts that arrives and extra revenue if you can take over Earls Court.

(for a Civilisation that either exists as Aboriginals or a subdivision of the UK, it's an odd choice to add them)

Yeah, it is an odd choice in that respect, but you must remember that a active portion of Civ fans use the world map with true start locations for playthroughs. For them, it is fantastic to see Australia represented, and those who come from Australia certainly will enjoy playing their home nation.

I personally have wanted to see an Australian Civ for a long time, as I would love to play a large world map game where players are fairly evenly spread out.

Well the cool thing is you'd really just be alone at the start with maybe one city state. So they'd have the whole island to themselves. Could become a powerful nation quickly:)
