27'' 2560x1440 Screen

Hey guys I'd like to get a 27'' highres ips/pls screen and I need some advice.
So far I've been looking at the Asus PB278Q and the Dell UltraSharp U2713HM, both seem to be very nice screen and both are under 600 Fr. (400£).
I'd use it for gaming, 3d drawing with SketchUp, some 3d rendering and photo editing and when I go to university for CAD work.

With one would you recommend? Thanks!

Tom did a review on the ASUS one, if you haven't seen that check it out. Asus are known for quality - whichever one is cheaper for you since both are fairly decent monitors and you don't need low response times since you aren't gaming. Overall the Asus is probably better reading around at reviews and stuff :3

edit: the Asus one has 100% sRGB output, whereas the Dell has 99% - not a huge fuss just means the Asus one can output slightly more colours.

i would go with dell ultraSharp series over most monitors out there, especially if you do 3d modelling, animations and drawing on it.

Imo he could go either way, both monitors are just as good as the other - so he may as well go for whichever one is cheaper :)

Thanks for your input guys, I ordered the Dell today as it got a better review on AnandTech. I guess I couldn't have gone wrong with either one but the Dell is said to be better calibrated from the factory.
I don't think that the response time will affect gaming to much, I'll just have to turn down the settings a bit so that my 6970 can keep up with the higher resolution.

I am pretty sure that the way to fix any issues will just be Anti-Aliasing it's performance decrease scales horribly at higher resolution - for even less benefit as well.

Yeah, Dell are pretty good for monitors, just not always for gaming - which is more important to me than anything else. Hence why I suggested the Asus over the Dell :P

I'll let you guys know what my first impressions are, I'll pick it up tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, really looking forward to it :-)

I got my screen now, but I somehow can't set the correct resolution, I can't set anything above 1080p. I un- and reinstalled both the videocard and the monitor drivers, I also tried different ports on the videocard. The screen is connected over a duallink dvi-d cable, so this shouldn't be a problem either.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I had a google and the closest thing someone else had fixed it by this:
"There is a tiny switch on the top edge of the card. This switch controls whether one of the DVI ports is single or dual link. It was in the single link position. When you switch it to the dual link position, you lose the use of one of the DP ports. There is nothing in any manual I could find describing this, but I found an image on one of ASUS's sales brochures."
So that also depends on GPU brand and stuff. I will edit this post if I find any thing else

Could you post the link here please, I have a Asus 6970 DCII and so far I've never seen such a switch.
I found something similar about the 7970: http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?13983-Can-t-get-Dual-Link-DVI-to-work-on-7970-DCU-II
I don't have such a switch

Thank you sooooo much Sir! You totally made my day! I didn't see the switch, it's so small and if you hand't told me I'd probably never found out that there was one.
Now everything is working perfectly!

Wish you a merry Christmas and all the best for 2013!

ps 2560x1440 looks awesome ;-)
