2600k stops stepping down the speed when I change RAM freq

Gigabyte P67-UD4 board (bios F5), 2600k...

In the BIOS if I change "System Memory Multiplier" from Auto to 16.00 (My sticks are 1600MHz and on Auto they only show as 1333MHz) then in windows CPU-Z shows my CPU core speed staying static at its max multipler.

I thought we had to disable all the turbo and eist and c1/c3/c6 etc to get it to be static? I can leave all of that set to Auto. Just load optimal defaults, set the memory multiplier, and bang it stays put at 3.5ghz.

Anyone know why it's doing this? It's a bit annoying actually because I quite like the idea of it saving energy when idle.

erm i don't, but, i may have the idea. if your setting the multiplier higher than default i think it'll stay there.

there is speedstep in my i5 750 BIOS. That alternates the multiplier with load etc and it can be switched off

You mean the memory multiplier? Yes default is 13 so I'm setting it higher to 16.

If you mean CPU multiplier, this is happening even when I don't touch it.
