24/7 3770k OC Voltage?

Hi,

Got my 3770k today with a P8Z77-V Deluxe.

Cooling is currently a D14, may change to water in a few weeks but havent decided on finances yet.

Played around with overclocks, and got up to 4.6 on 1.26 volts. This goes into the 'red' zone on the bios, but I know that isnt really that high.

I'd quite like to try and put it up higher if i can, but does anyone have any ideas of the highest voltage for 24/7 overclock? Obviously dont want to go killing it in the first week for going too ambitious.

Thanks!

Thanks for replying. I saw your thread the other day so kind of hoped you'd be one to help

Temperatures are around 75/80 while on IBT with ULNAs on. But I'm kind of thinking that no other program i use, ie - games are gunna stress it that much, so I dont mind temps going a little high during stressing

Well, you have pretty much the same temps as I do, and you're running a higher clock - I think you're doing just fine

And no, nothing should stress it as much as IBT does - that thing is a killer!

My motherboard advises me not to go above 1.4v, but I think that if your temps are still good at 1.3/1.35v then it should be alright.

I think my own personal marker would be to stop when IBT starts reaching the high 80s/low 90s.

Who knows what watercooling will bring, if you do choose to go that path!

I dont think i will go for water tbh. I did plan for it, but then I saw an amazing deal on a laptop so spent nearly 600 quid there, then in pricing up watercooling that was another 400 for everything, plus specialtech barely even had the fittings I needed and it just makes things so complicated.

Thanks for the help though, i'll get testing that now!

Ah, a shame, but I remember the laptop you got, and it really was a good buy.

Still, I think 4.6GHz is still mighty fine, and you're not even finished yet!

Bah, I would say the same, but one of my i7s has the tendency to melt through my leg whenever it's used too aggressively. Stupid laptop -.-

haha, tried taking the over off and seeing if theres dust in?

my other laptop was like that massively and was too hot to be used as a lap-top.

How do you disable the throttling down btw? so the cpu doesnt drop to 1.6ghz when idle? I'm unna try and validate a 5ghz. No way this is getting stable at even 4.8. Already at 1.38 and no stable. massive volt increase from 4.7-4.8!

Disable EIST and Turbo Boost.

And yeah, I have before, and it looked fine. Now I have some thermal paste, I may very well replace the old stuff at some point.

It took me 1.4v to get a validation-stable 5GHz run. Make sure you enter your email where it asks you, because internet browsers, or at least Chrome, seem to become unstable.

To turn it off, turn intel speedtesp technology off in the bios. Should be somewhere in the CPU menus.

lol oh wow xD my laptop has a side vent and I am thankfull for that xD

Thanks. Stable on 4.8, stressed with prime at 1.38v.

Temps hit 95 though so i think it's time to call it a day, get the 5ghz then drop back to 4.6 or something

Ah yes, I forgot about speedstep D:

I wish my laptop did, tbh. It either uses it's aluminium body to directly transfer the heat into the tissue of my leg, or uses strategically placed vents just where the screen hinge is found to do the same thing!

Yeah, I didn't even look at my temps when I went for 5 - it was a hit and run kind of job

Good luck!

Wouldnt have it at all! Went all the way up to 1.45v before calling it a day.

You definitely got luckier with your chip than me. Might have to try again sometime. I've read they can go up to 1.5 before things get dangerous, just dont wanna be doing that on it's first day!

Thanks for all the help though!

I left it at the same 1.45 that I tried with turbo on. It was getting late so I couldnt be bothered to take the volts down again, just went for it first time, so probably could have done it with less.

Coming from AMD...I have no idea what XMP even is?

-yawns- I really need to stop staying up so late, it kills me the next morning

XMP stands for Extreme Memory Profile. It allows your motherboard to correctly configure your RAM to run at its rated speeds. From the look of your sig, your ram is only running at 1066MHz - unless that's actually the rated speed, you can get your RAM kicked up a few notches.

haha, thanks. Yeh i did set the RAM to that to be safe. Normally have it locked to 1600. Will try XMP soon...

But, I'm not struggling to get it stable...

Is there any chance pushing it to 1.45v could have killed it slightly?

Cant get a IBT run stable at 4.5ghz using 1.235volts, testing at 1.24 now but this isnt looking good. It managed 1.225 yesterday.

Dunno if i've not enabled some setting or something but this isnt looking great...
