24/7 - 365 Overclock

Hey Guys

So I just received a few parts today and hoping the rest will be here by Monday or Tuesday.

I am using the MSi MPower, i7 - 3770k with a bequiet! Dark Rock 2 and would like to know if anyone is doing a oc config for 24/7 - 365?

I really never turned off my laptop when I still had it. I am always working or gaming or downloading.

Thanks

I've never used MSI mobos but their reputation isnt too bad.

first of all give us full spec, power supply and gpu is what we really need aswell to make sure that the psu is capable of providing power.

3770k is a great chip to begin with and if you arent running cf it wont cap gpu.

in terms of OC; did you oc ever before? that would help. besides the oc3d community is more of a oc yourself instead of ask for config.

depending on your luck you can push 3770k upto 5gz assuming you have a lucky golden sample and sufficient cooling.

at first id go with 4ghz as a 24/7 stable oc, with intel chips you want to increase multiplier instead of core so 100x40 should get you stable 4gz, you might want to bump the volt on the cpu a little if its not stable aswell as ram to 1.6(or maximum v specified by manufacturer)

hope this helped you a little.

if you want to go past 4gz mark then here's a good guide with detailed explanantions: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ivy-bridge-overclocking-core-i7-3770k,3198-2.html

Wow that was a quick reply :D

PSU: bequiet! straight power 680w
GPU: MSI TwinFrozr iii HD7950
All in a 650D so the airflow shouldn't be a issue

I did do a bit of overclocking on my first custom rig. It was with a Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz and I do follow the oc websites like oc3d so I pick up a good read here and there.

I also thought about 4ghz as a stable 24/7 oc.

Thanks for the input Pr3d

You should be able to get more than 4.0ghz. Most Ivybridge chips will hit 4.2ghz before you even have to up the voltage.
You should manage 4.5ghz easily enough

Unless you have a bad chip 4.5 Ghz should be doable. It's up to you and check if the temps are acceptable for a 24/7 OC.

Don't forget to check if your overclock is actually stable

That MPower ahas OC Genie built in. Turn your pc off then tap the OC Genie button. Power up. Insta 4.2Ghz. No fuss no muss.

Its just instant extra performance. Temps remain fairly safe even on a stock cooler. He can then play with more serious clocks once he gets better than stock cooling.

Until I get swing a Cosair H100i, I'm not going to bother messing with volts. It's summer here and I dont like the cores going above 70c on a stock cooler. OC Genie just provides a nice, safe, instant performance boost. I use it 24/7 till i can better cooling.

Will Prime95 for about 3-4 hours be enough?

Guess you are new to OC then :P

when you test for stability run for full non-stop 24 or 48 hours, especially if you want it 24/7 oc.

as others said 4ghz is a baby step, you can easily do higher oc then that but then you will have to play around things like voltages etc.

exacery, and it sounds that youre rather like me in that you are unwilling to fry a cpu on stock intel cooling. Thats ok, ill get my H100i next month and will become an OC Demon shortly thereafter.

Start somewhere? start with the OC Genie mate. it works like a charm. The OC Genie starts at 4.2Ghz. 4Ghz is only 100Mhz over turbo for you.

I wouldn't touch OC Genie with a 10 foot barge pole. Do it properly, and to it yourself.

Read the overclocking guide by Master&Puppet. It uses the same UEFI as the MPower.

I did mate, about 10 times :) I dont trust myself enough without a proper cooler, hence my "burning desire" for an H100i :D Due to my daughters upcoming birthday I wont be ableto swing one until mid febuary.

Im still too new to the while IB thing and am leary of temperatures. I know when Tom OC's with the H100 temps stay in the mid-60's. It's summer here and I dont like seeing hardware monitor go up to 70 on any of the cores. I have posted on this asking what temps you guys consider acceptable, but 80 is still too high for my taste.

My limit is 80*C for Intel Burn Test, which is around the mid 70s for Prime etc.
Nothing's going to work your CPU like the synthetic stress tests do, so there's not much to worry about.
The OC Genie tool uses more volts than required in a bid to keep the system stable. As such, it makes your chip run hotter than they need to.

Once you get a bench stable OC make sure to play BF3 for an hour or two, many bench stable oc's fail to run that game because it's quite forceful in terms of resources.
