2018 i7 8700k ITX build

Hi there,

I am planning to build a new i7 8700k ITX system and would like some advice. My planned build:

CPU: Intel i7 8700k ~ £340

MOBO: Gigabyte Z370N Wifi ~ £143.46

RAM: G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16GB 3000Mhz ~ £163
Or: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16GB 3000Mhz ~ £164 (Prefered look)

PSU: BeQuiet! 600W Pure Power 10 CM Modular ~ £72

GPU: ASUS GTX 1070 Turbo ~ Already Own

Cooler: H100i V2 ~ Already Own

Storage: 500GB SSD + 2TB HDD ~ Already Own

My question is firstly, does this planned build seem ok? Or is there something I could be using instead of things I'v choosen? Maybe cheaper options? Or is there maybe an issue or something I am missing?

Secondly, as for an ITX case, I can't decide between the NZXT H200i or the Phanteks Enthoo Evolv. I like the phanteks more due to features but I prefer the smaller size of the H200i. Any opinions?

Also if anyone has any idea or has something similar, how loud will this system be?

Thanks

I wouldn't get either case.

I am using the Evolv. I dislike it a lot. Terrible airflow and quality control on the inside is meh(mostly the sliding rail for rads/fans).

Personally wish i got the Fractal Nano S.

Hmm interesting. I was leaning towards the h200i personally. Do you think the nano s is better than both? I was considering it but I just didnt like the look as much. What is it about the nano s that makes it better for you? is it quieter by any chance?

Better airflow and I know fractal cases are very high quality and well thought out from experience.

Not a big fan of NZXT. Internal looks slightly better. But it seems pretty expensive for what it is.

As NBD has mentioned, go for the Fractal Design Define Nano S. It is much better quality, good airflow and just solid all around.

If you ever plan on going smaller and have questions, feel free to ask them. As I’ve gone from ATX all the way down to one of the smallest cases on the market; the Dan Case A4 SFX :p

The only thing i would change is the motherboard. I wouldn't trust it to overclock an 8700K. Maybe with fan directly over the VRM, but it is a stretch.

ASRock Fatal1ty Z370 Gaming ITX/ac is the only one with decent VRM.
ASUS STRIX Z370-I Gaming would be the only other worth considering, also with some airflow over VRM.

They both are more expensive, but i think they are worth the money.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I was looking to make this a very small build but I wanted to fit the 1070 and the H100i which limits a lot of SFF itx cases.

I was under the impression that the fatal1ty board was a worse option than the gigabyte board. Would a 5Ghz OC be a problem on the gigabyte board then?

The reason I opted for the Z370N was I needed a lot of USB 3.0 on the rear panel which a lot of itx mobos dont have.

Then the smallest you can go is the NCASE M1, which can fit an 240 AIO, such as the H100i and fit a full size GPU.

That case looks nice, even has an TG panel option! although around £150 is a lot

Also im assuming that the airflow will be sacrificed so not as good cooling = noisier fans?

Also I'v just realised that the 240 AIO would be mounted in front of the mobo so there would be no point to have hte window :(

No, that’s correct... Although, to be completely honest here, you seem to have too high expectations. A small build WILL be compromisses, that’s just how it really works. Unfortunately that’s just how it is, you can’t have it all.

Yeh I'm aware, but maybe there was something good that I hadn't come across that can tick most of the boxes. tbh I'll just be sticking with the h200i or nano s.

And mostly changing up the gigabyte Z370N with the AsRock fatal1ty board as after some more research into the VRMs and the OC capabilities, the gigabyte board does look like the weaker option.

But again unless someone has a good reason for something different let me know :)

ASRock is the best built ITX board. ASUS is probably the most optimized in BIOS and features. And Gigabyte well we all know their BIOS isn't that good.

For connectivity ASRock has Thunderbolt built in. It is 20 Gb/s instead of 40 Gb/s TB but for USB connectivity you can just buy HUB and connect anything that you need.

I would suggest that you turn back case fan to push air in rather than pull it out. In that case you will have front AIO in, back fan in, blowing air directly on the VRM and 2 fans top for exhaust. If you set it up that way any board will do fine.

Also you can change thermal pads on VRM heatsinks. Der8auer did testing with X299 and just buy replacing stock pads with ThermalGrizzly ones he got better temps. Make sure you clean heatsink and VRMs with alcohol and ALWAYS use same thickness pads to replace the stock ones.

Hey Avet,

All of that makes sense to me, and thanks for the good advice on the arrangement of things!

Ok, I'll glad you guys helped me out as I will definitely be changing to the asrock board and other than that I think I'm pretty content with ordering everything tomorrow :)

Is there a place to post a finished build on the forums or will no one be interested in that hah?
