2 Stage Cascade

Cold Blast from the Past !

It was one of those days where I was sitting in front of my computer, bummed, trying to figure out a few life issues I have mainly with the care of my mother who is in a dementia/Alzheimer’s care facility, but my thoughts kept going to benching as they always seem to do LOL

An email dropped in my inbox from a person I had not heard from in some time and that in itself was surprising to me.

I opened the email and my jaw just about dropped to the floor.

A most amazing thing was dropped on my door step, well email inbox :) completely out of the blue.

I had to reread it several times just to make sure and I hit the reply button and asked to tell me more !

Several email exchanges went back and forth, my mind was racing thinking about the details and basically how the heck am I going to pull this off.

Finally a phone call from this person and things were settled on with dates and times etc.

The day came today and off I went, leaving at 1:00am and just returning at 7:30pm, something like 18.5 hours of solid driving of 856 miles. I am very tired LOL.

This is what dropped into my benching room tonight. This is the build log.

Just a pic of it here, this is a 3 year old picture btw

And it in it’s new home

I want to make this clear here. I do not know who the original owner of this machine is. From what I was told it was only used a few times and put into storage for all these years.

Please do not ask any details of any of the parties involved in this as they wish to remain unknown, for whatever reasons they have, I will honor their wishes.

All I know is it was offered to me by a 3rd party broker and I went for it.

The unit needs a bit of cleaning, mostly dust, and a few other things tidied up. But all in all it is in great shape.

It was run for me so I could see how it works and with different loads.

At 200w… it is holding -95c…

At 270w… it is holding -89c….

At 285w… it is holding -87c….

As I am a bit tired atm I will test this myself here at home, get used to running it and get to work on cleaning it up. I will post more pic’s of it and do a few benches with it to see how it handles these loads.

You cannot imagine how I excited I am to have this unit in my bench room, it was the first 2 stager build that I just feel in love with back when I first started looking at these things, and now here it is <pinches self>

Enjoy !

Thanks everyone :)

Yeah this machine is a real beast and performs very well, easy to use but could use a few updates, it was built a few years ago and at the time heat loads that we see now were not as high.

It has no Hot Gass Bypass which makes it a problem for CPU's that cold bug in the range of operation of this Cascade. So what I have to do is shut down the Second Stage and allow the Evap to warm up, then boot the computer and fire up the Second Stage again. This is not the best thing to do with these machines so I do not do that very often.

It could also be retuned to handle higher heat loads better. But as builders are so hard to come by that can work on these things, at least in my area, and it is built so well as it stands I most likely will not mess around with that, but rather build a new one myself when I learn how to do this stuff.

I would also like to have a much longer Suction Line so I can have it reach just about any place, as it stands now I must do the benching on top of the unit which actually works very well. These Suction Lines are very stiff and not so easy to flex around all over the place so this works ok as it stands.

It is on a very nice rolling platform which has been copied around a fair amount now, but this one is the first to use a cart like this that I know of.

I have used this machine a great deal and it has shown no problems what so ever. But if you watch that video I did of its operation you can see they do make a fair amount of noise, plus it requies to power cords/plugs to run. I am lucky where I live that I can run this machine, SS Phase and all my other normal computer stuff at the same time with out popping any fuses, I should be fine for a 3 Stager at some point :)

HAHA Thanks everyone, you guys are nuts :)

It does make Ice very nicely ;)

And even my wife and family don't mind it running in my benching room. When the pool is to warm in teh summer time I just wheel it out to the pool and drop the evap in the water and freeze everything over nice and cold like LOL
