16gb kit, Samsung 1600Mhz 30nm or Dominator GT 2133Mhz

The Samsung ram is 89.99, the corsair ram is 193.99.

I read that timings of 2133mhz 9-10-10-24 are easily achievable at 1.45v with the Samsung kit.

Do I go with the Corsair, or do I gamble on overclocking the Samsung kit?

Does anyone have any experience running the Samsung stuff at 1866/2133?

Rig will be 3930k, h100, RIVE, GTX680.

knowing the motherboard would help lol

if your mobo can run 2133 natively then id go with corsair, and samsung? ive never even knew samsung makes ram

I prefer kingstonm myself, ocd from 1600 to 1866 without problem and no voltage changes

Lol, Samsung produce mainly for OEMs I believe. I've got some Samsung DDR2 ram lying around from a Fujitsu Siemens machine.

As for your question, some people may be lucky enough to get results like that from the Samsung ram, but there's no guarantee because it's not what they're made to do.

At least with the Corsair kit you'll know it'll definitely run at 2133. It will also look a lot nicer. But you never know, perhaps you'll get lucky!

samsung make some of the most reliable sticks ever made and are at the forefront of ddr tech as they are ready today for the shift to ddr4 for eg.

these 30nm ic do look the nuts and i have seen a few guys hitting 2400mhz from them so could well be worth a punt even if you dont get great ocers you wil still have good solid sticks.

Ok i rang the guys at Scan, to check ETA on the Dominator GT (they are £30 cheaper than overclockers.co.uk) and they suggested

Corsair X79 Memory Vengeance LP Jet Black 16GB DDR3 1600 MHz CAS 8 XMP.

Its £109 so not a bad price. He stated it would be better for overclocking the CPU (more stable as it goes up)

Actually i believe that samsung make many of the modules which are found on branded dimms. They just arent known for selling dimms.

When it comes to ram selection i have never put much emphasis on speed. It makes no difference to gaming or cpu rendering. I just tend to go with a quality brand at a standard speed so I'd go with the samsung. I can't see you getting more than £5 worth of extra performance out of the corsair ram even though it technically will have a noticably greater bandwidth in benchmarks. In the real world you won't see more than like 10%.

You also have to remember that in order to get the best overclock on your cpu you start with the ram set on 1333 as higher ram speeds can destabilse the rig. If you max out the cpu clock then you might only get 1600 on the corsair anyway unless you want to sacrafice cpu clock (which you shouldn't.)

tech advice from a sales person....

not a chance he is pushing those sticks as he knows they are instock and they want to sell them at all....

i know its on sb not sbe but dropping from 2133 to 1866 or 1333 has made no change in the max speed i can get from from my cpu, nor has only running 2 sticks or filling all 4 as it just takes a small bump on the io to compensate for the extra ram.

like m+p said you wont notice the speed in everyday use but it does show up in cpu heavy stuff, 1600 cas 9 to 2133 cas 9 take around 15s off a vid encode for me and while only a small amount of time its a minute every 4 and i would rather have that for myself than sat waiting.

So crunching the numbers its a 15-25% increase in performance out the box, with a 50% chance I may well be able to achieve near par performance, for 105% more in cost. So even if they do not end up stable at 2133, the samsung is still much better value.

Plus I never turn down an opportunity to do something for science. Thank you for the input everybody, I think I will settle on the samsung RAM.

Good choice sir

Having just read the TTL z77 and IB reviews you might well get to use the high RAM speed on the corsairs but it is still miles from being worth it unless you want to pay a premium for business purposes.
