1394 Network connection

Moving masses of stuff this weekend, backing up and so on.

Friday, went across 10/100 network - max transfer speed 10.5 MB/s

Friday, t+139m - jammed in a 1g card in one pc, no freakin lead - scratch that ida.

Friday, t+180m - oo firewire ports on both sides, stuffed in the cable... max transfer 16 MB/s ?

Shouldn`t it be higher ?

One pc has both the small type 1394 and the large one - would using the smaller one give a different xfer r8 or is it just connectivity ?

(both pc`s 1394 nic display 400 Mbps - both pcs are using SATA1)

At a guess it would be that the firewire's being held back by the pci bus. You aren't going to get more than 12.5 mb/s on the 10/100 anyways, and you probably wouldn't get significantly fast with 1gb either.

Ya 12.5 is the theoretical max for the 10/100, that I`m happy with - getting 10.5 is pretty good, that`s peak over 110g copied.

Theoretically 1394 should be 50. So I would expect somewhere in the 40s.

The bus wouldn`t slow it down, it`s shown Mbps will be what to expect. It shows 400, 400 is established.

I don`t understand the 16 MB/s.

I`ve tried a 2 way transfer and it maxed @ 8.5, which is only a little over.

EDIT: Think I gotta look @ protocols.

Not true. Just because you're connected at 100mb with the 10/100 doesn't mean you're getting all the 12.5 mb transfer speed ;).

It's probably a firewall which is causing your problems with the firewire. Also, one of your 1G cards might have auto sense, so you could try using a normal patch lead (if that's what your problem was).

Well ya, I`ve acknowledged I`m happy with getting 10.5 over 10/100 ???!?!?! And u`r going to expect a loss of the same order on a setup based on 4x the transfer r8, there would be no point in having it. 50 to 16 MB/s is no where near the same comparison.

I dismissed the 1g coz I`ve not got the lead.

The firewall will not retard the rate, it will close the connection. It`s redundant from the infranet atm.
